Hey Stephen!
I know I come across strong with my ideas from time to time and your post is totally taken in the spirit that it's given, dear bruv.
So good to hear from Emmett, hey?! When he said repeated notes within a chord and staccato that made perfect sense.
I guess I could've made my comments clearer by saying almost all my single line playing is without repeated notes with the same finger. It's just my preference and everyone has their own focus, I'm just passionate about these things. When I first started playing I wanted to remove myself as far away as possible from that typewriter/computer game sound. ...What Powagoat said about tone....
It's all good, and I didn't take offense and you didn't offer any, or the other way around. Nothing but mutual love and flowers and sunshine.
Now onto more of this stuff! ***************************** TYPEWRITER STYLE!!!! I've wrestled with that connotation and with that style of playing for a long while now (1819 days). I can typewrite tap like a mutha-f'er, and I can also play without that typewriter peckity peck style, with lots of nice hand movement and three fingers. But with two fingers of both hands acting like one 4-fingered hand, I can probably play my fastest, and my cleanest, and my most legato.
Here's my 6-finger version of what I'm talking about (two hand, 3-finger each, with the occasional pinky):
Am I typing like a person who types when they tap? (Maybe?) Am I Free Hands Tapping? (Kind of?) Am I just playing kind of shitty (well, yes!). And probably not like anyone else? (Er, pretty sure yes?)
So "Typewriter Terror!" or "Pedal Tone Wrangler With One Big 8-Fingered Hand" or whatever--I'm just rocking it out and trying to have some fun and make some music. And DEFINITELY not a good example of anything, other than hopefully enthusiasm. I take no offense, as long as you don't knock my style, or even if you do, because Gosh darn it, I like my style and what I can do with it. Your mileage will of course vary. ************* For the newbies, some terms and nomenclature and background: A "tuning post": Where all good and bad Stickists pile on ad naesuem for their favorite Chapman Stick tuning preferences, and insist--nay, DEMAND, that their tuning is the only RIGHT and TRUE one way. The most lively type of tuning posts will divide into BASS SIDE TUNED IN SOME FLAVOR OF 5THs versus BASS SIDE TUNED IN SOME FLAVOR OF 4ths. And the WORST fights are when someone foolishly proclaims that tuning in all thirds is actually the Way to Rock Thyself Out. It's all good fun until someone starts crying and then there's always a divorce or two and a few scrapes and contusions. Good times.
