I've heard Tom Griesgraber and Larry Tuttle use what you call "tap muting" very well. I love Glenn's use of the technique.
For tape muting, I prefer electrical tape. I keep a roll of it in my gig bag pocket and if I manage to get to a gig early enough usually pull off a couple of pieces and hang them on the front lip of my rack or on a mic stand so I can grab them quickly during a performance.
One of the parts on "Dissent" from Lift uses tape on the melody strings (rhythmic part throughout and a solo starts around 4:50)
ralph towner uses a matchbook. to get a mbira like "prepared" effect on acoustic guitar. i've experimented it a bit , but haven't found something that works as well on the stick. hmm maybe wax paper ?
