Post Re: Having troubles learning this thing? Tell us...
Probably a bit of everything. I've been on this idea of horizontal vs vertical knowledge lately that's really been helping me get a better understanding of teaching and learning.

Basically, there are 2 main types of knowledge on a subject:

Horizontal, or a broad but ultimately shallow knowledge of many topics and concepts involved in the subject

and

Vertical, or a deep understanding and focus of a certain topic or concept.

For example, I have horizontal knowledge of music things like jazz soloing, 20th century harmony techniques, Afro cuban rhythms, etc. I know enough on these topics that I could fake my way through them and most people would probably hear my efforts as authentic. However, there would be a subset of people that definitely know better.

I have decent vertical knowledge on things like the technical aspects of playing the Stick, rock soloing, odd meters, modern harmony techniques, voice leading, etc. I have a good understanding of these concepts, and have done work to make many of them second nature.

The big difference between the two is how many details you have internalized in each topic. I know way more about how to play and write in crazy odd times in aurally pleasing ways than I do about how to take a proper jazz solo, and that's cool, that's been my focus.

So I guess what I'm trying to say is that I struggle a bit with everything because there are always more details to learn, no matter how much you already know on a subject, and I think that's the way it should be.

Right the freak on, Josh. You seem to be so much older than us now.(that is not meant to be sarcastic in any way) Focus on what you are focusing on. When you get it, change your focus! Maybe, even before. There is so much going on, you would have to step out of time to master it all.

How many angles of "view" does it take to know that you know the subject? All senses combined into a super-stereo construct, plus the "senses" of memory (seeing into the past) and rational logic (seeing the pattern behind the pieces).

Knowledge in depth is "vertical", where strings are pulled upward and down. You're sure you know it. Everybody else knows you know it. You can put it to work. You can play with it. You can lead others.

Leads us back to music. The more faculties of mind you can apply, the more layers of self involved, the clearer and more complete the statement.

I actually think this interaction between Kevin and Scott is a perfect example of what I mean:

Scott is giving us a list of songs he has made short arrangements of through sight reading. He's expanding his horizontal knowledge on these tunes by learning more and more of them (he has the catchy parts and some accompaniment, but not the whole song with all the nuances start to finish for each of these) to deepen his vertical knowledge of sight reading on Stick.

Kevin then requests a display of a more vertical-oriented playthrough, rather than more of the horizontal knowledge that Scott has been growing. Scott acknowledges this and to show that he hasn't been slacking, gives a list of all of the songs he has expanded his horizontal knowledge to include. It's a big list, and one to be proud of.

I find it fascinating how each type of knowledge feeds into one another in different ways, such as Scott's use of horizontal song learning to vertically increase his reading ability, and how each of these methods resonate differently with different people.

I have to admit, Scott, sometimes--this time, for instance-- I don't know what the heck you are talking about.

But you are a shining example to those who would pick up the Chapman Stick!

Scott, read my first comment on page 3, I go into what vertical vs horizontal knowledge are. I'm not the guy to come up with this stuff, its a concept that's been floating around for a bit. I think it applies well to structuring the learning process and helping one improve consistently.

Sorry, man. I will look into it; I was under the mistaken impression that I was improving.
