Hi everyone, This may seem like a random request but I'm trying to remember a particular bass chord I've seen used by Bob C. What I recall is that Bob used his pinky on the lowest bass string. Does anyone know a bass chord(s) fingered that way? (Bass in 5ths.) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I can think of about 6 or 8 voicings off the top of my head. Could be many instances of a passing figure or moving voice within a progression. Specifics? |

Pretty sure it wasn't a passing note. I don't have any pinky-bass shapes in my list of chords, hence the question! Putting the pinky first turns the hand and causes the voicing to "point" towards the nut whereas my bass chords all face the other way... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I've been enjoying these Root- Fifth chord positions Bob turned me onto. They can create a nice drone effect to play RH over lacking a third. Perhaps this is what you are referring to? For example - Move fret or string and keep relationship 7th fret - 7th string - pinky -D 7th fret - 8th string - ring finger - A (5th) 5th fret - 9th string - index finger - D octave Or 7th fret - 7th string - pinky -D 5th fret - 9th string - middle finger -D octave 5th fret - 10th string - index finger - A (5th) Harry |

Actually Bob uses his pinky a lot in regular root, 5th, 10th Chords, doubling the root or the 5th one octave lower, going for the lower string. Tried that but it is an incredible hard and stressful position to have your pinky ready for... but maybe that's just me, I have small fingers... either way, he does it al the time with ease... the guy is just not human. If you have the Stick Book, check out page 3-3 or 3-5 (sorry I don't have it in front of me) in the upper right hand corner there are two alternative voicings shown for Major and minor triads, with the root on the lowest string, played by the pinky: Code: Major (fingered 4-1-2) - | - | R | - | - | - | - | - | - | 5 | - | - | - | - |M3 | minor (fingered 4-1-2) - | - | R | - | - | - | - | - | - | 5 | - | - | - |m3 | - | Not sure if that's the chord you're thinking about.... |

Just watching Bob opened alot of doors for me in the left hand. Thinking of ANY finger as root opens up worlds. That's the beauty of the Stick. Free your mind, free your hands...(gotta look at Greg's suggestions) |

Thanks guys - very helpful. I'll try these suggestions and I'm also going to explore chord spelling using a paper grid. I'm guessing I can drop certain voices from the bass side (e.g. 5ths?) and add these to the melody hand. I'm encouraged to experiment!
