Re: Reading in "real time" on the Stick
Great post, and some wonderful thoughts and comments. My take.....as a trombone player being able to read anything put in front of me first time at about 90% and then the second playing at 100% was the single most significant musical skill that got me work. In the U.K. a huge proportion of working in sessions and on shows is the ability to read. If you can't, get better or accept you won't get work. That mindset has helped me a lot on Stick. It's very different in that it's a lot rarer as a Stick player to get a call for work that requires sight reading but just being able to is such a great musical skill, and like anything else, requires practice and regular 'doing' to get better. One hand at a time or both (envious of those who can read on both sides) it's hugely valuable to be able to. It helps with theory, scale shapes, ear training, there is value across the board. A little bit every day. Set the metronome and don't stop!
