I'd say yourself Brett...lol. This bass line is written with quarter notes only but it's possible to give a really good jazz swing with 8ths as a chromatic or double chromatic approach of the next coming chord. |

Ok here is the deal. No one really "wrote" this bassline, it is an organic, intrinsic jazz walking bassline. I borrowed it from Jeff Berlin. Jeff even says no one wrote it but everyone plays it (like a folk song) Mr. Berlin has new student walk a chorus of blues. He then points out whatever weaknesses they have and puts this bassline in front of them and has them read it. He tells them it is "perfect" and advises them to internalize it. Internalize one perfect thing. I think it's wonderful advice. As stick players this type of bassline (there are many) forces us out of Memorized patterns and into melody and music. What I mean is that we can see how the focus is done to get the target note of what's coming after (the resolution in fact). Some tricks are chromatic approaches...half tone higher or lower of the target note of the next chord...or double chromatic approach. That's why my suggestion was to put also height notes and not only quarter notes. I consider myself lucky to understand what's goin' on here 'cause I can play the bass this way and each chorus is different because I don't memorize these lines, I just play them logically. Tell you again...I'm lucky, even though I worked hard in the past to understand what were the basics of this finality. |

All worked out, I am really focused on playing and making a lot of advancements. Little lessons like this really help, thanks Brett! |
