Difference in hand sensibility
There's something I've been meaning to ask, that Youenn spotted in my playing early on at stick Camp and that I work hard at everyday but am still far from perfection : do any of you guys have problems with the left hand having much less control over the dynamics? I know from my life experience with the double bass, that my left hand has a lot of strength and it's used to press really hard on the strings. It's still difficult to control all the subtleties: it's either too Loud or too low. No were near the control I have on the right hand... that one doesn't give me any troubles: it was a clean start so no bad habits. Just a quick example: if I play with the left hand on the melody side, there's a big chance the amp will explode Cheers Rod Sent by Tapatalk

Re: Difference in hand sensibility
If you are right handed this is natural. The left hand needs more training we do not use it with the same finesse as our right hands. Even on traditional stringed instruments the left hand stops the strings it is the right which plays them. Great violinists often say the artistry is in the bow

Re: Difference in hand sensibility
Funny you should mention this, I suffer from the same thing Rodrigo...
I thought that my LH was pretty good, and as far as strength and endurance goes, it is. But dynamics is a weak point, especially in regards to keeping a consistent 'velocity' on each of the strings.
It has made me realize that on guitar or bass, my right hand is in charge of the dynamics. Even for some timing things...
No end of things to work on, no end. And that's good...

Re: Difference in hand sensibility
Rodrigo,
Anyone who has taken a seminar with me in the last 12 yeas knows I believe that hand movement is a key to dynamic control, in both hands.. They might be skeptical at first, but we do a few key exercises, and it's clear.
If you want better dynamic control, don't rely on a "typing" motion for tapping, add the support of the hand shifting along the line of the string, all the time. It helps with dynamic control, and also, tone and hand independence.
This aspect of things is shown in my DVD. If it's not clear to you, then let's do a lesson sometime.
Hand movement is the foundation of all of my playing, in both hands. It opens up so many possibilities, and makes everything so much easier.

Yes Greg is correct. If you haven't studied with him you should consider it

Re: Difference in hand sensibility
I second what Brett said... my playing really came together when I started using more hand movement along with Greg's lessons.
