We see the quality question quite a bit, it's a great question. There's no wrong answers so long as one is open to the options that their time, money and effort realistically dictate. Krappies provide a low cost option into the world of two handed tapping instruments. The gentleman that runs that shop really loves what he does and he's happy doing it, it's a fine option if the goal is: Entry into to the world of Free Hands style tuning and playing; a single beam with inverted 5ths in the left hand and descending 4ths in the right with separate outputs for each set of 4/5/6 strings. This is the glittering prize and should be the focus if the goal is discovery. There are others, of which I am one, that will not settle for a lower quality instrument. At 54, I've waited quite long enough to afford a premium handmade instrument from a world-class independent instrument manufacturer. I'm content with the options available from SE and the level of service afforded. The margin of quality is my desire - even though I've witnessed my share of more seasoned players cutting it up on a 34" ironwood straight into an amp. I would not be content with a Krappy, but I'm also not a new player so the Krappy option for new players is a great low-cost entry into two-handed realm. |
