Post Yggdrasil & Piano
Yggdrasil, The World Tree, and my solo piano tune, "Stark Reflections, Then the Rain."

Mandelbulber 2.16-dev (Jos-Leys Kleinian + Modulus Mandelbulb + JSplacement color maps and displacement maps + diamond plate steel normal and diffusion maps).

"Stark Reflections, Then the Rain," is one of my personal favorites of my entire life's work, and judging by the plays and sells over its almost 5-year life, it's my most popular thing I've done for piano. It was also a one-take, completely improvised sitdown in the living room piano one day, and this entire piece came out, to be fortunately captured by the MIDI recorder on the living room piano. It's got a couple of tiny little errors in timing near the end and in places, but I just could never mess with this. (I have made a strings version that I quantized and it's not near as good.)

I do have sheet music I made from Pro Tools and Sibelius, and I should do something with it one of these days. And let much better piano players than me have at this. I listen to this piece whenever I feel less than awesome about myself, and I'm still amazed that this came from me.

I don't often put this tune on a video, but it synced up perfectly and it just felt like it was the piece for this video. I have a bunch of tunes at the 4:20 length, and I tried several with this before using "Stark Reflections."

The video was originally called "Snakes on a Plane." An Asgardian Plane, where the roots of the World Tree, Yggdrasil, touch the Nine Worlds. And the snake is the World Snake, the Midgard Serpent, Jörmungandr, who lies coiled around the Tree, eating itself by the tail. (Hey, I'm just a fractal skald/bard here!)

Happy Holidays!

Adds: Oh, I forgot to add that I haven't played piano since 4th of July and it's been nothing but Stick, until New Year's this year. So I wanted some pianer tinkling to celebrate...the not playing of piano. ;)

If a piano had a growl, yours would be it, and I really get a sense of the hammers pounding on the harp strings, even in the highest register - a distinctive style for sure.

The visuals are organic with Precambrian creatures that only David Lynch could love.

Thanks once again SS, for a multimedia adventure on a Sunday morning.

Post Re: Yggdrasil & Piano
Thanks, guys! I was able to get on the piano for a tiny bit by popular demand from the family yesterday for some Christmas tunes. I also played Joy to the World on the Railboard (as well as Somewhere over the Rainbow, which isn't a Christmas tune but should be!)

I do loves me some piano. But I've never been happier as a learning musician than I've been on Stick. It's really stretched me in ways that piano has not for some 35 years. And taking a break from piano entirely has been great for the Sticking. I'll have to limit the piano time, even after my New Year's timeout.

Thanks, Emmett! It's kind of hard to have your own sound for piano, or at least, not as easy as is seems to be for guitar. But there's a certain sound that I've been seeking and have had to make it myself. It's a blend of pianos, actually. I like different sounds from different makers in a blend, and have some with attacks that I like, and some with sustains, and some that have an awesome lower register and some the higher. And getting those really, really, high notes to sound at all decent is a challenge. There's barely any mass in those strings, and they are tripled up just to provide extra volume. And there's no cushion under them at the very top of the keyboard, so they keep ringing even after the key is let go. And sometimes I'm still not happy with those super high notes, and rarely go up that high.

Thanks, guys, for checking it out! I have one last piano tune coming that I wrote this 4th of July, right before my timeout. I'll share that one later. And I have my blues Stick tune to work on for the end of the year collab.
