Extended range instruments sure are fun. Are you an Animals as Leaders fan? I often feel that group has really explored and pioneered some of the outer limits of what an 8 string guitar is capable of.
I am aware of them, and I have an album or two - really a great instrumental metal act but I actually got into extended range guitar because of 3 guys - Steve Vai, John Petrucci and Charlie Hunter. Tosin and co. are really awesome, but I am a lot more interested in what Charlie does haha I like Tuck Andress, Les PaulChet Atkins, Jerry Reed, Lenny Breau a lot so that figures in as well... Not metal shredders, but those guys really tear it up.
I've had 7 strings on and off for years, I think I still have a Universe and a Prestige laying around although I gave one Universe to the late great Shawn Lane... He needed a guitar, and was having some troubles... I miss Shawn, brilliant musician and such a nice guy!
I bought a 9 string just before I got a Stick, thinking that it would "help" with Stick studies but jeez did I hate that thing. sounded bad, unplayable, etc etc... not my bag.
I always wanted to get into a Charlie Hunter kind of thing, I've been aware of him for quite some time (He is utterly fantastic!) and I enjoy what he does - I'd like to maybe emulate that and mix it in with what I already do as a guitarist. I took the 8 string plunge recently, and these videos are just me messing around and getting familiar with the layout.
Fun stuff. Oh hey, thanks for checking out my video!
