Post Re: Vocal Software
Thanks, Werkspace, for that video about pre-amps. That was very informative. Scarily, I could really hear the difference in pre-amps, which sucks! Mics sound different, mixing boards sound different, and now pre-amps, too? I see why there are all these plugins to emulate the sound of a particular mixing board or studio setup. But that sucks! This was already complicated enough on picking out a good vocal mic.

The Behringer Mic100 should be at the house today when I get off work. I'll try it out, and thanks!

Meanwhile, Scott Kerr (Jayeskerr) tells me that I don't really need any additional vocal software; that I already have everything I need. He's got a good point there, that I have far more than the Beatles ever had to record with. But the counter to that is I don't have half the stuff that Abby Roads has, with echo rooms and clean rooms, and sound-proofed rooms, and a whole stable of technicians and engineers who have done all that research into the best vocal pre-amps, and can hook everything up in those fancy mixing boards. Of course, they only had 4 tracks, and then later, 8. I got 'em beat on that!

But Scott's point is that the major DAWs (Pro Tools, or Logic Pro X) have most of the features that I was looking for from a vocal software suite. They have EQ and Compression, and Elastic Audio, and some form of pitch control and correction. Melodyne is a lot of money for something that I probably don't need, but I am interested in it. Scott doesn't like how it changes vocals. I like it better than Autotune, but not as good as WAVES Tuner. I think Native Instruments make a pitch corrector as well, and there's one natively onboard Logic Pro X (but not Pro Tools).

So, maybe I have what I need. This also comes on the heels of spending 30 hours this weekend to produce the vocals to "Snow Day in Hell," my latest tune. Yeah, the only thing I'm really lacking at the moment is that harmony and harmonization feature of the Antares Harmony Evo plugin, which I used to own. I think I'm going to pick that up, plus the new mic, the R0DE NT-1a, which I got last week and absolutely love so far, and the mic pre-amp, and call it a day for vocals.

By the way, I finally noticed that the R0DE NT-1A spells "R0DENT," if you mash it all together. I have 2 songs now in the vocal kitty completed, and I'll share them real soon!

Thanks for the help and feedback, guys! My vocals journeys will be clogging up the Stickist board starting later today!!!

Post Re: Vocal Software
I picked up the 64-bit version of the Harmony Evo plugin for $250.

The last time I had it--the 32-bit version--I did this with it (skip to the end if you just want to hear the chorus of 16 people and parts):

Listening to this now, there's a million things I'd do differently, and better. But the harmonies of the Evo were a lot of fun to play with. I've not been able to re-mix this tune, and lay down better tracks, without ripping out all the vocals and starting all over. Now with the Evo plugin back in my Pro Tools again, I can clean this poor little rock-opera up. And still redo about half the vocals.

I used it on my "Snow Day in Hell," (in the Showcase) but only on the ending. I won't repost it here, but you can check it out in its own post. I'm having a lot of fun with the Harmony Evo!

That sounded realistic and melodious. And obviously works in real time. Very nice, Werkspace! Thanks!

Adds: is this their current version of the vocalist, WS?

This video was informative about the Live 5 version that you referred to earlier. Also with a Jam Man stereo looper.

I have the JamMan looper solo, I would like to get the stereo version.
It's a lot of fun and compliments the Vocalist products very well.
Listen carefully to the subtle effects of this combo in the following video.
