Another option - I spent 30 years as a pro pedal steel player and this is what steel players sit on. Having the same exact seat every night is crucial to playing that instrument. The seat cushion opens up to reveal several compartments which hold strings, cables, tuners, volume pedals and whatnot. The legs fold up and lock and the top locks shut. Some are very fancy and have their own power strip, drink holders and or even speakers and an amp/EFX rack. Years ago they came standard with ashtrays. Mine is pretty minimal and it's held up since I bought it used about 20 + years ago and it was about 10 years old then. I just check it at the airport like a suitcase and I've dragged it all over the world many times. Still intact. It's great for Stick because it's a constant height and angle, you don't have to get used to a different chair every night and it contains all your small loose shit.
Several small shops make them. Here's one. http://www.steelseat.com/
You can also find them used in the classified section of the steel guitar forum.

I play Stick to unwind and relax. 8-) I prefer to play laying down.

:D But I can't get anything done laying down! Except a nap, perhaps hahaha For the life of me, I don't know how you can play like that, man! If it works for you, do it I say!

For me, I am thinking that Emmet's chair is a really, really great idea. Excellent practice tool. Performing ain't no thing, 'cause I stand up anyways... But I have to get the Stick to be supported, as my thumbs/hands ache daily from practice, and I know that "holding the instrument up" while I play is killing my speed and articulation...
