Post Irma's Whim
Now's the time, 12 noon here in L.A. and 3PM in Florida. All forecasters are hypnotized by their own statistical projections, grinding previous hurricane trajectories into their computers. One outstanding fact may be missing - the sheer size and force of this one, it's negative mass and momentum.

I told Yuta late last night, Irma is barreling westward, following the long northern Cuban coastline, and maybe it won't make that sharp right northward turn like all the others. Maybe it's too big to be influenced by coastlines, at least not to the usual extent.

Then there's another mass media hypnosis, this one political. Cuba is absorbing the absolute brunt of Irma's energy all along its skinny island and not a mention is made on TV news. Surely there'd be some cell phone shots or layman reports that would filter through. Reporters' work should be easy on this one, no digging required. Why this news blackout?

So where's the sharp northward turn? Now they say it'll hit Florida's west coast instead of the east coast and those evacuating must re-scatter. If Irma were to push right on through the 'strait" of Florida and Cuba by sheer mass, she'd find even more stimulation in warmer Gulf waters and might end up landing in Louisiana or even again in Texas, only a God would know.

It's pretty much going exactly where they predicted, which is horrible because it's basically going to ravage Florida all the way.

I have several friends and coworkers dealing with it now, with the influx of various in-laws.

And, sadly, a coworker who's 8 year old daughter survived her THIRD heart surgery 3 months back, and through all of the donations form us at work and various other charities, he got to take his family (wife and 4 kids) to Disneyworld...they are apparently hunkered down in the hotel now.

Anyway - here's hoping for the least possible damage and injuries to all affected. And that includes all of the other human beings affected in the Caribbean, not just the American ones!

Irma decided to go up Florida's west coast line instead of hugging the east side. I thought she would continue on her westward vector all along the Cuban coastline, shooting out into the Caribbean's warmer waters and landing somewhere in TX or LA with even greater force. So much for armchair predictions.

The damage will be terrible in FL but must already be worse on the islands of the West Indies, especially Cuba, which seems to have been excluded from TV news coverage.

Largo is in the path. Sean Malone may still live there. I grew up there, age 1 to 3 in my Grandma's tiny shack . No town then, just scrubby pines, swampy puddles with snakes and a rural route two-lane road to Clearwater. Strangely enough, I remember it well, a singular environment.

Please Irma, no drastic coastal changes.

yeah, our country's (well, at least our political cadre's) fascination with acting like Cuba is some rogue state is beyond me...Jesus, we do arm deals with Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia (we know at least 19 of those Saudi's for a peculiar reason)...and the list goes on and on. Like these governments are somehow a cut above Cuba's?

Those damn Cubans just went up and decided to nationalize a bunch of AMERICAN sugar plantations 70 something fucking years ago and we still treat them like they started the AIDS epidemic and gave us Miley Cyrus.

It's mind blowing. I honestly thought that when Obama began doing the first sane thing in the last 8 presidents to normalize relations with that country that things would get better. They will, in time, when American corporate interest realize there is money to be made there...until then...

I can only imagine the devastation that was and is still being wrought upon that country.
