Post Return To Reason - new music
The title has a double meaning. My reduced social media diet has actually made writing music easier - go figure. Second, this is the first tune I have written using Propellerhead Reason in about two years. No Stick on this one but that will change going forward now that the Helix is back up in the studio. It has been out of the studio because of various solo Chapman Stick gigs including five more through September.

LinnStrument - Trillian (slap bass), AAS String Studio (electric violin)
Zendrum - Superior Drummer 3 (custom kit)
Keyboard - AAS Lounge Lizard (electric piano) and lead guitar (Orange Tree Sample's Evolution Infinity), ReSpire Synth.

Post Re: Return To Reason - new music
Sits right in the sweet spot between prog and fusion (as I feel it). Starts in 7 like many prog songs but it seems more of a rhythmic phrase than a numbers game. Then there's the amazing harmonic construction and chord progressions, first opening to major chords based on the 8-tone diminished scale (alternating half and whole steps).

Jeremy is living electronically in today's music (what to call it?) and would always know how to put together a band and go on the road, that is, if his other practice allowed. He promises to add live Stick to his concept and there you have it, an original and very up-to-date prog rock band with a strong touch of fusion.

And please don't knock fusion as dated. Listening to the energy and spirit of any of those early bands lets me know that we've all gotten a bit lax, even at the cutting edge.

Thanks so much for the kind words, Emmett. That is exactly what I was going for in the piece.

So many awesome things going on here. Emmett describes it very well harmonically, so I'll rave on the sound palettes: I loved the bass tone with that Trillian slap bass, the Evolution Infinity sounded great (I've got the Strawberry and the Dracus, and both rock very hard, from Orange Tree Samples. I'll take a look at the Infinity). I'm always a sucker for an electric piano sound with some funkiness and high up in the mix. I dug that riff and comp throughout most of the tune.

I really dug your solo as well, rocking the violin sound. Linnstruments are still on my radar as a possible Christmas splurge. Lots of good expressive bends and mods going on there.

The breakdown to the slow, contemplative section at 3:36 is a very nice change of energy. Almost dreamlike, and then some dissonance on the geetars coming in. At 5:12, we get a nice string section and the rythm section kicks it back up and----we're out. Wow, well done!

I also agree with Emmett's characterization as halfway between fusion and prog. Call it "Frog." (Don't.) "Prusion"? :D I'll just call it "awesomely rocking" and definitely proggy.

And whenever I listen to one of Jeremy's latest, I always say "Well, Steve, you slacker, back to the studio and get to working!" You are highly inspirational, sir, and thank you for sharing your awesomeness with us, Jeremy!

Nice, reminds me of some of the Minnemann, Levin, Rudess stuff. Especially some of the tones you're getting.

This was a lot of fun to listen to, I am a big fan of your works!

It kind of reminded me of the sort of stuff one might hear on a Mario World level, especially the violin parts. The linn-guitar solo was pretty cool, reminded me a bit of Frank Gambale in spots...
The violin stuff kind of evoked Jean Luc Ponty to my ears...

Thanks! I was a huge Jean Luc Ponty fan back in the day - I saw him with Al Dimeola, Stanley Clarke, and Bela Fleck and also with Return To Forever.

Very, very cool. I swear I don't miss the Stick on this one. I detect some Hatfield/National Health crammed in there somewhere...
