Anyone working on Harmonic Minor Stuff at the moment?
It's pretty cool. Lots of fun, weepy classical-eastern sound for the win... If you have any clips, I'd love to hear/see them! Hey, if Uncle Yng approves, it must be cool...
Here's a quick Harmonic minor unison (octave apart actually) scale thing just for fun!

Hi Scott hmmmm. Harmonic minor, good enough for Yngwie, good enough for all of us! As it happens i used it in the last piece I posted a few days back, its in showcase , the thread is Updated ALTO piece on Soundcloud, comments? At about 45 sec in the line that ascends twice is straight up the D harmonic minor scale, added a different flavour ( I think ) after the first theme at the start. I see you are back in action , cool. B

Scott! Harmonic minor? I love harmonic minor. It's a minor scale with that leading halftone from the 7th to the octave/root. It's just so satisfying to keep the minor feel but resolve with that halfstep. I use it all the time, as you know, from hearing my stuff.
I'm not using it anything on the Sticks at the moment. I'm using a modified minor scales with blues elements (really pentatonics, I guess), but not using that sharp 7th at the moment.
One of my longest recordings is this improvised six-and-a-half minute exploration of A Harmonic Minor, called "A minor Explosion," on piano.
A minor Explosion (Piano)
It's only a matter of time before one of my next Stick tunes uses harmonic minor. And piratebruce's Alto Stick recording the other day was just an awesome example of using it as well. Thanks for sharing that, Bruce! I'd love to see a live video, too!
Scott, I can't see your video of the Octave Harmonic Minor yet here at work, but I'll check it out over lunchtime on my phone. I loved your little pentatonic video yesterday, and I saw right when I went to bed that you also had a new harmonic minor video up. I'll be sure to check it out!

Hi Scott,
on my side I use this scale in a very specific case. Let's say I play in Dm and my chord progession is ending on a A7b9...that is exactly where I use this Dm harmonic minor scale...on the V7b9...it covers (in A7b9) all the notes you need to get this particular sound (ambiance) to come back to your Dm with or without this C# leading tone.

Very cool, I will be headed over there to check out asap. No access to Soundcloud where I was today, you know how it is. I'm looking forward to checking it out!

Makes sense, A7b9 is the V of Harmonic minor, I guess that would give you a Mixolydianb9b13 (Or Phrygian Dominant as The shred dweebs like to call it.. hehe) Yep, all of those cool tensions are there, gives a very cool eastern flavour for a moment... Plus it's fun, eh?
On a related topic, I really, really like it over Emin7b5 and Fmaj7#5 before heading over to a Bbmaj7 and ending on an A7b9, then never really resolving it to Dmin for a couple of passes, but when I DO finally resolve it, I like a Dmin/maj7, cause it sounds cool! For rock stuff, you really need to spread the tensions out throughout the various instruments or things can sound a bit muddy. Really fun stuff. I love how Al Dimeola uses HMin, really fun to watch/listen to him go nuts (Race With Devil On Spanish Highway has a moment or two of Harmonic minor) And of course there's lots of other guys (Paco De Lucia and John McLaughlin, etc etc)

Yeah, My video is nothing fancy; just the scale for reference. I am pretty sure that once you get a good method for translating your piano vocabulary to the Stick, shit's gonna get real... your tunes rock, man. I can't wait to see what you do with Harmonic minor...
