Post More Late Night Sticklooping Jams
And by more I mean the first that I've actually recorded.
GODDAMN I love this thing. Really hard to put her down, you know?
I've got the Gr-55 now so i've been playing with that endlessly...

This isn't really a progress update video - I've actually been getting a lot of awesome tunes going, but trying to finalize the mixes on my band's album gets in the way of recording videos  . This is a just a little idea I had between mixing sessions. Noodled off camera for a few minutes and then basically improvised the layers. I was using the GR-55 looper instead of my JamMan Stereo just to try it out. The JamMan is where it's at though.
Once again everything is just going through my roland cube street ex, the bass side is going straight in and the melody side is purely GR-55 with no stick pickup. recorded with the trusty Zoom H2n
Thanks for checking it out

Thanks! Yeah this is by no means my full set, this is just my bedroom practice amp.
My full set up is essentially the bass side through a PODHD500 and the Melody side through the GR-55, with the true Melody side pickup routed out to other FX. Everything goes to a full range amps, like the KC500.
With regard to the GR-55, I spent a good long time fiddling with the string response. I've got it now where my glitching is at an absolute minimum... I have to play a little harder to get the notes to sound than when I'm using the true stick sound, but for me it's actually a very nice compromise... instead of getting false positive notes, if I hit something wrong I get silence. SO from this point it's just a matter of nailing the playing technique when using the GR-55.
I'll still have the true stick sound processed separately and faded in at my discretion. The heavy COSM tones do kind of suck, but honestly, I'm not a "heavy" type of player, generally. My days of super overdrive (on treble side of things at least  ) are behind me. i got the GR-55 specifically to explore blended synth tones (and COSM acoustics, which are useful if you spend time EQing) I'm been getting some REALLY cool tones out of it that are very useful for my needs, and I think what really takes it to the next level is when I post-process the GR-55 with another stompbox modeler. I work with a lot more experimental sounds so being able to have a bizarro dulcimer and synthpad (?sure why not) style patch come out of the GR-55 and then into a broader FX board is really opening up some insane sounds for me. In my band it's me, a guitar player, and a drummer. Our guitarist already does some really intense looping, so I'm not necessarily needed as ANOTHER guitar-like instrument (stick melody).Having all these outside tones lets me fill out a lot of space inbetween and add a whole other layer of noise to the music.

There are some excellent GR-55 patches on http://www.vguitarforums.com/smf/

Awesome man! How's the tracking on the GR-55?

Like I said, after working for awhile with the response, I felt that I was able to get a pretty lcean sound out of it. The tracking works well for my needs, but you do need to sit and work with each string individually and as a group to lessen the amount of mistriggers you are going to experience. I'm not trying to track long piano runs on this thing (I have a piano...) but for adding synth tones and just altogether "weirdness" to my sound the GR-55 does a pretty darn great job.

Before I "discovered" the stick, I was planning to build a doubleneck bass/guitar and get a looper.

After purchasing my Grand I had kind of dismissed the idea of looping, myself.

However, I am reconsidering now that I am learning some songs that have repeating layered parts that I might not want/or be able play all at once, such as Bjork's "Army of Me" or Opeth's "Goblin".

Even as a writing tool it might be quite useful.

:D (my daughter asked me to include a smilie)

I went with the Boss GP10 and with that I can reliably trigger most VST notes on a Mac, at reasonable tempos. I've found that the MIDI side of things helps with embellishment and/or coloring the natural Stick sound here and there. I am missing a looper with the GP10 unit, though, and I can relate to the terrible overdrive patches.
