Re: Gonna try my hand at busking
So, here's my report!
My town is very music friendly. I play social mixers for the Chamber of Commerce. They encourage musicians to come out and play but, the key is finding a business that won't mind you in front of their shop. Luckily for me, I know most of them from playing at their parties.
I asked the owner of the ice cream store yesterday if she would mind. She said anytime I want to play in front of her shop I can. Since I don't have a battery powered amp yet I needed to plug in. She said, anything I need to do, go ahead and do it.
Next to the ice cream shop is an Italian restaurant and next to that is a Starbucks. Nice location. I got there early to beat out the other buskers. They got kicked out of one spot (owner must not have had a good experience with them) so they went to the next block down.
I made a few bucks, passed out some business cards, and received lots of compliments. Best compliment of the night had to be, "You guys (plural!) sound good."
I'll probably do this more next summer. I learned a lot about busking while doing this , like how to say 'thank you" anytime during a song. And, saying it's called a Chapman Stick anytime during a song. Also, song selection was important. I stayed light and upbeat for the 1.5 hours and it payed off. Good times!
Busking tip: Using your case can be a problem because it kept shutting closed, unless you have a truss rod wrench! Just shimmy the wrench between the top and bottom of the open case and it will hold it open for you! Brilliant!
