VID:The "Bassic" Idea #1 - moving chord shape/shifting meter
Hi everyone,
I was practicing the other day and came up with this little idea, so I though I'd record it for memory and so you could check it out:

First the dual bass reciprocal video and now this. Have you been having a hankering (gotta love that word) for low notes lately? I can't blame you.
I am not a big fan of the 3 finger approach (especially on the bass side), but this video really demonstrates how well you can make it work. Wow!

Most excellent! I too was not a fan of the 3 finger approach… However, when I started studying with Greg, I decided to "park" the pinky and give it a try…. What I found (for me) was that it opened up a whole new world of expression, movement and dexterity…. I think it has also gone a long way in my ability to have the Independence/interdependence of my hands working… I will still use 4 fingers on some chords, but for melodic purposes in my right hand, the 3 fingers are working… pinky is usually just motoring in the back ground, ready when I need it!

Re: VID: The Bassic Idea #1 - moving chord shape/shifting me
Glad you guys like it. I never presume that what sounds like its working to me is going to fly, so I appreciate that.
As far as 3 fingers goes. For this kind of bass-side playing, the only think I'm thinking about is where the notes are that I want to play. As the mode is changing from chord to chord, there's no time to think about fingerings...
I spend a fair amount of time these days practicing true unisons (or offset by an octave) in both hands, using the same fingerings. I'm not talking about the Reciprocal Unison, where you use the same geometric pattern on both sets of strings, but true unison, where you have to shift one of the hands' position as you transition from string to string (usually the left). I believe this has really helped me train my left hand to move more quickly around the board because I'm "tapping into" reflexes that are already there in my right hand.
The more similar I can make these two hands, the more "equal" they become, even though the tunings and typical scale of the frets is usually quite different for each hand.

Thanks Ben and Scott,
I'd be happy to post the left hand modes for each chord if you're interested.

Re: VID:The "Bassic" Idea #1 - moving chord shape/shifting m
A student asked me about the modes involved, here they are. The right hand chord stays the same shape, just shifting up and down the board, creating different harmony depending on the bass note.
First right hand chord is D A C# - the bassline is B Dorian Second RH chord is C G B - the bassline is B Phrygian Repeat the first chord/line the go up to Eb Bb D over C Dorian F C E over D Dorian and finally E B D# over B Mixolydian
