Stick Science - Rule of Thumb
Hi everyone, I've got a new Stick Science video ready. This one is on the various uses of your thumbs while playing the Stick. This topic is a lot of fun and needs more exploration. Check out some of the stuff Kevin Keith and Bob Culbertson do, those guys really make good use of their thumbs while playing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpGyF-wt3N0&feature=youtu.beAlso, if you can make it, I've got a show with And The Traveler this Friday at Spike Hill in Brooklyn, NY. It would be super cool to see any of you there!

Thanks for the video! Great timing, I too was recently introduced to my thumbs by Steve Adelson.

Ah, another Stick Science to enjoy, thanks Josh!
Is that new artwork on your left arm, or did I just miss it before?

Hello Josh, ..thanks a lot for your sharing... ...using the right thumb for struming on higher register of the bass side is a very good idea... ...I will try to realize this too....

Re: Stick Science - Rule of Thumb
Bless You! Must be going around.
I particularly enjoyed the bit about strumming with your thumb while holding down a chord on the bass side, all the while playing melody on the, well, melody side. I experimented with this technique a few years ago because I missed the rhythmic effect you can get, say on an acoustic guitar, by using different strum patterns. But I think I gave up too soon. thanks for the video and for inspiring me to give it another go.
Mike

Re: Stick Science - Rule of Thumb
Hey everyone, thanks for watching!
Mike - I'm glad I'm touching on something familiar. I'm getting some really cool results with the strumming technique. The 5ths in the bass make for some really cool easy chords by adding the 9th, so I've been playing around with constructing a lot of extended harmony chords between the melody in the treble side and the chords in the bass.
Balt - Thanks for watching! The strumming isn't my idea, just one that I've stolen and began cultivating. Best of luck! Post a video with the results!
Gusset - The one on my left is actually my oldest. My newest ink is on my side.
Carbon - Yeah man, he showed me some of this stuff a few years back but it was kind of ahead of my time then. I let it stew for a bit and finally felt comfortable enough on the instrument to start really playing with the techniques. Steve is a wealth of knowledge, and I still have moments of "Oh THAT'S what he meant!" years after he taught me something.
AnDroid - Yeah man, he's killer, thanks for reminding me!

Not stolen, borrowed Or better yet, inspired by. How many years have you been at it - the stick, I mean?

Re: Stick Science - Rule of Thumb
Carbon - I've heard it said that good artists borrow, but great ones steal. Also, I've been playing for just over 3 years this past September.
Stickrad - Hey man, thanks for watching!
