Post Re: Four by Miles Davis
LOL! It was a spur of the moment moment. I recall seeing Victor Wooten swing his bass around his whole body AND do a backflip mid solo out at the Playboy Jazz festival back in the day. That guy is truly a phenomenon.

So, no backflips, but I can manage a quick spin.

Marc Bagasou (tenor player) has been urging me to learn this one. I was able to march through the chords but hitting the melody was a work in progress. Once you learn that quick modulation in the middle, the rest is fairly straight up.

Happy Friday everyone!
-Gene

I was in over my head with this one, so quite pleased to just make it to the end. I think this one took about 6 takes and then it was off to gymnastics class for the girls.

I really should have saved some of the song of the week outtakes. Lots of creative and colorful language...

Yes tougher than the usual pop repertoire.
Walking bass on this tune on the aganda?

Perhaps. As it stand, I am just alternating in between the root and fifth above for most of A section. I would like to walk lines in between the melodic statements (I think that's bar 3-4 and 7-8) in the a section.

While it would be a kickass milestone, I would rather not walk lines while soloing. I like the sound of comped chords (Root,3rd and 7th) underneath the solo. That is what I am most comfortable in an unaccompanied format. As I get more familiar with a tune, I am more prepared to experiment with it.

More practice.

Nice tune, nice tone, nice twirl! Gene, I have no idea how you pull off a song a week, but I always look forward to your Thursday posts.

Thanks!

Shouldn't have mentioned the outtakes, Gene...

Who wants to see a Best of "Song of the Week" Bloopers video?
I do.
Oh, yes ... I do.

This is actually one of the Real Book tunes at the top of my list (right now I've started a bit of work on "All of Me"). I like your interpretation very much!!

Here in Montreal in the hockey language we call this a spin-o-rama...lol...

Thanks Clare! Lots of great different styles here on the Stickist. I will have to see if I can dig up some of the more entertaining moments for SOTW. That would be rich...
