Tres Bajo la Mesa
So, as a homework assignment I had to compose something on bass, and as a last minute thing I decided to throw in a part with the Stick. It's a 3-part thing; the first two parts are still bass but the third one is on the Stick, although I was going to use bass as well for it. Anyway, here it is: https://soundcloud.com/chochos/tres-bajo-la-mesaMeans "three under the table". It's based on three kids playing silly games under a table (my nephew, niece and son). The idea is that each part represents one of the kids, and I tried to represent their personality through music. At least that was the "seed" for this... I had no idea how it was going to turn out, but it's not bad, I think.

Re: Tres Bajo la Mesa
Enrique,
I think, IMHO, it turned out great!
I love three melody based contrapuntal music. You created a really nice sound balanced on the three melodies and achieved your goal. Plus not only was the "seed" a great idea*, but you captured the playfulness of your little ones under the table. A true artist can set the mood by using the right sonorities, and you certainly did!
Was a homework assignment? - if so, I'd give it an A+ !
nice work, Dave B
*( ideas come from all angles and sometimes it's just a phrase that someone said funny that sparks a rhythm cadence that leads to you going "duh, duh, duumm da-dah" which leads to the funkiest bass lines or coolest lyrical melody lines)

Re: Tres Bajo la Mesa
Thank you!
Yes, it was a homework assignment: record a song based on some memorable moment during the holidays, preferably one I could take a picture of, to remember it afterwards etc.
I showed it to my teacher yesterday and he liked it; I heard the song for the first time on big speakers and boy do I need to fix some levels, equalize it properly, etc; I had only been listening to it on my headphones, and I suppose most people will do the same, so it's not a mejor problem, but on a home stereo the arpeggiated track is just too loud, it overpowers the Stick entirely.
But he even told me to bring the tracks separately for next class because he has some ideas and tips he wants to show me, because he thinks I can even explore some more ideas on this song, which is funny because I actually removed some stuff, to keep it from sounding like a showcase of the stuff I've learned in the past six months (although I left a polyrhythmic riff with the Stick towards the end, to signal the shift into 4/4 for the outro).
Anyway, glad you liked it!

Re: Tres Bajo la Mesa
Very nice ! It does create the right atmos for the homework assignment. A while after the stick has come in , it sounds a bit like some sounds used it the inception app, love it !
Cheers, Bas

Re: Tres Bajo la Mesa
Gene,
It definitely got me going. At first when I heard about exercises such as "write a song about this salt shaker" or stuff like that I thought "yeah, right" but now I understand. It's a lot easier to make music based on very specific, concrete stuff rather than some abstract emotion. At least it's a lot easier to start, which for me has always been the most difficult part.
I composed and recorded this song in about 3 weeks. Before this, the last time I recorded something original was 4 years ago and it took me 4 months, for a 4 minute long piece (it was way more elaborate, had a couple short guitar solos in it - after all, out wedding dance had to be perfect!) but after that I just couldn't find inspiration to make any music. This way of finding almost any excuse to come up with a theme is just great, I'll definitely be making more music this year.

I try to do the same to get this independence between the hands...not easy. I also practice what you do on "Ejercicio en Chapman Stick". I've seen that you wrote your sound isn't good on your videos because of your laptop but it's possible to hear it quite well. Thanks
