Gentle Giant - A Reunion (new mp3)
Not to get anyone's hopes up, but no this is not to announce the legendary prog group is getting back together but that I have spontaneously decided to record a rough little draft of the tune of the same name. I just fired up Logic and recorded a few takes in mono direct from the Acoustic Image Coda, not much in the way of post-processing or polishing, so please don't expect something spectacular. Just something fun I've been working on lately. http://wavearts.com/Rob/mp3/Reunion.mp3

Part of it sounds like "Why, Why, Tell 'em That It's Human Nature" to me. I like it.

I think Gentle Giant could have used a Stick player!! I LOVE Gentle Giant and the Three Friends album is classic Giant! I was lucky enough to see them in Boston on the Free Hands tour ... mind blowing!

Re: Gentle Giant - A Reunion (new mp3)
Thanks guys, I'm trying to get this one more ready for live performance, I tried it at an open mic last night and crashed and burned with it in the beginning, told the three folks listening I would try it again next week, but they said "go ahead, it's an open mic!" so I stumbled through a half-ok rendition. Trying to record it solidifies it a bit more. Part of the fun of learning this tune was finding a score of it on the GG page: http://www.blazemonger.com/GG/sheetmusic/index.htmlFor people who are into a little bit of music theory, there are lots of neat little things going on in the song- while it is centered around a basic G A D A chord progression, when the verses start they substitute one of the A chords with Am7 to slightly alter the favor of the harmony. Then there is a chord sequence based on ascending 4ths, and later a series of colorful sus4, 6, 7th and 9th chords build on an ascending bassline... there is a lot of subtle crafstmanship apparent in how the harmony and melody work together throughout the song. I could only approximate the string quartet bits of course.

Nice work. There's something about your style that really appeals to me, and as usual this has that trademark 'Rob' feel to it.
I'm a prog fan, but I've never heard any Gentle Giant. I always hated the name and didn't like the album covers. Prog is the sort of music that if you don't go looking for a band the their music doesn't come and find you! (eg no airplay)

IMO they are one of the most inventive and interesting prog bands ever.

If memory serves, the members of the band often voiced their frustrations over not ever catching on in England in the way they would have liked/expected. I think their most enthusiastic fan base over on that side of the pond was in Italy. Jim
