Post Learn a tune challenge.
Was thinking it would be fun to challenge the community to see if we all picked the same tune and had a deadline of say the first of the month that we could post video or audio or both of what we got done in the month. Even if it’s only the beginning of a tune. I think it would be cool to see how each person comes up with an arrangement of a tune and in the end we could have multiple versions of the same tune to compare. It would be a way to learn a new tune a month and in doing so improve our playing skills. Also hearing other people do the same tune we could learn ( or steal ) ideas from each other . We could discuss what we got out of the exercise. I was thinking of maybe starting with Bohemian Tapsody. (Rhapsody) We could collectively decide what to work on for the following month. Kind of like a tune of the month club. We all work on our versions and share what we came up with. I always compare as many versions of a tune before I start working on my own arrangement. Mostly to hear what I like and don’t like. Anyone want to take up the challenge of learning a song a month. I’m know Scott will jump on this. Josh , Bruce, Boaz, Gene , Greg , Steve. And all the other awesome stick players out there.

I knew you would be in. You do this on a daily basis it seems so this should be easy.

Ok I like the idea but I just don't have the time to spend on this.

But... You have to check this version out!

I think this is a great idea. I recall that the afstg has done this with some success!

http://www.afstg.com/fora/

I generally seek out tunes that have some sort of personal connection, so I've been known to be a bummer about learning songs that I have no connection with. Which is not to say that I do not adore Queen. Actually, News of the World was one of my first cassettes.

Maybe if we limited it to an album or a band, we could still have some autonomy in our song decision. My most recent additions to the set have been Billy Joel's Just the way you are (it was a request!) and Hendrix's Wind Cries Mary (no one will ever play it like Giancarlo). I also just completed Sweet Love by Anita Baker, which was a really fun exercise.

So, so long as I have a little wiggle room, I am in as I like the community songlearn concept. Thanks for including me! :D

Its like a book of the month club. Sometimes you get books you might not like to read Like 50 Shades of Grey.lol We ll try to come up with something for Bohemian due Feb 1st . Even if its just the intro. Tunes can always be added down the road so if someone joins the Song of the month club they can contribute their version at a future time . Perhaps we can collectively suggest tunes and Ill run a poll at the beginning of each month based on suggestions and then we have a month to digest and spit out a new tune that everyone voted for. This will get us learning things we might not have considered but that people in the real world would want to hear in a gig. It will be cool to hear how people interpret the same tune. This is always voluntary. no pressure. Lots of fun.

I started to learn Just the Way you are and Im not familiar with the Anita BAker you mentioned Gene.

I promise you, I will take a stab at anything, and I will happily go down in flames trying it.
