Post Re: Some wild NS Stick work

That was super awesome amazo! Guy can play, and I dug the tutorial style he had, explaining things on the right. I like that format a lot, and maybe I'll steal that as well. I really dug his dampener explorations, and that he could hammer on the low strings with it on and still get a staccato note out of it.

Plus, I dug the Pykmax (sp?) thingie he was using to pick and then tap without losing his pick. Lots of coolness with this one.

Goes back to YouTube video:

Pykmax = http://amzn.to/2op9xoR
NS/Stick = http://www.stick.com/instruments/ns/
Ontogeny = https://www.facebook.com/Ontogeny-143...

So who is this guy exactly? And thanks for sharing! (Facebook link is broken. )

:D Jeez, I don't know if I liked it... The fella is really good, but I'm not sure if it really resonated with me. Could be the genre and the fact that I am old as dirt...

Big respect to his playing though, I think it's just the context that isn't my bag. I watched this a couple of times and he's very capable!

lol

The song he's playing is not my cup of metal at all. I was just giving him props for his chops, and also digging the tutorial style, with the running written commentary on the right while he just rocks it out on the left. I wouldn't listen to the tune otherwise (no offense to any fans).

And it's good to see Sticks and NS/Sticks in as wide a variety of contexts as possible. I hate a lot of country music, but I'd cheer on anyone who had some chickens in the bread-fat, pickin' out dough, on a Stick. It's good to see this guy preaching and teaching the Gospel According to Stick, Book of the NS. And I learned about some new gear (Pyk-widget--Pykmax.).

I think regardless of taste, we can all appreciate the technicality of his playing

Anyone know what his trick was unmuting the dampener and could he just as easily remute it back as easily?

There's no trick. The dampener is designed to move up and away from the strings, or be pulled down and onto the strings to mute. You can do it while playing, as he was doing.

The only "trick" he was doing in the video was to leave the dampener still down and on the strings, but by hammering on the fatter lowest bass string, he could still get the open string to ring in a staccato burst. The dampener isn't perfect and the fattest string can override it, especially if done intentionally.
