Y’know, I really liked what Trey did in the beginning with the Chromatic Fantasy bit, but the rest was not my taste really...

I actually liked the third song, Hope, at 5:44 or so. I don't know a thing about Robert Fripp whatsoever. I did enjoy his 2-handed monophonic soloing. Does he ever touch the bass side at all? Ever play more than one note at a time? Very brass-like, in that regard. You got 10 strings man! Give me a doublestop or a chord! But it does validate 2-handed playing for me--not that I was gonna stop doing it anyway.

Please don't take this as arrogant, cause the guy's got talent, but I was very non-intimidated by his style. I would have different note choice, but I felt like I could handle this Sticking. Whereas I can name 43 different Stickists who definitely intimidate me--in a good way!

[Googles Fripp..] Oh shit. I just insulted the Jesus of King Crimson and Stickdom, and one of Rolling Stone's Top 100 Guitar Players of All Time. Oops! Give me a Bob Culbertson or a J. Goldberg or PirateBruce anyday! I did think of Jayesskerr's arpeggio style but thought that Scott could kick Fripp's butt at it on Stick AND play the damn bass on the other side. You know, those other 5-6 strings!

You may all burn the heretic, now!

Thanks for sharing that, rclere, even though I'm a grumpy curmudgeon! (I re-watched and he DOES touch the bass side every now and then. I still call poser.)

Just to make sure - you understand that Fripp is the electric guitarist and the Stickist is Trey Gunn?

Er, no! I'm referring to the Stick player. And I am confusing the two! My comments are for Gunn, not Fripp. The Stick player. And there were so many guitar players! Not quite the "string quartet" I'm used to. My apologies for confusing the two guys!

I prefer Jason Brock's stick effects.

I have to respectfully disagree, Steve. I think he’s really good- good enough to make it look a lot easier than it actually is.

I assume his foot was on a volume pedal, and combined with the tapping, plucking/strumming, and sliding, there’s some serious skill in play there for my money to get that buttery smoothness. I don’t think he’s hiding behind his pedal board (though I’d love to know what his signal chain is to get that melody tone). I could play the notes no doubt, but I’d be nowhere near that refinement.

Victor, you are definitely right about his skill and making it look easier than it is. I didn't mean he sucked or anything. And he has a nice tone and good control of his sound. I just watch so many of these Stick players and think "How do they do all that?" I admit that I did think "I could do that!" but I have that feeling watching pop music all the time, and have yet to write "Shake it Off." So no disrespect for Trey Gunn for being merely human, and concentrating on his 2-handed, monophonic lines, instead of 2-handed counterpoint with lots of chords. Everybody's got their own rock in the stream coming off of Stick Mountain.

I will admit to being in the minority of Stickists that is not a King Crimson fan. I love Prog Rock as well, so that's not it. I'm not a huge jazz fan either, but 十人十色 juu nin to iro (10 people: 10 colors) – different strokes for different folks.

But thanks so much for sharing this! I now know the difference between Robert Fripp and Trey Gunn! And I do like how he used two hands on the melody side for some tasty arpeggios. Still rocking it out, although maybe not my bag.

-Steve

lol Robert Fripp is my least favourite guitarist on the planet. I like Neil Young better hahaha (And I don't like Neil Young much as a guitarist :D ) King Crimson is not something I listen to often, some of it isn't too bad but I'd rather listen to ummm pretty much anything (Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Slayer...)

:D Sorry KC fans, but Mr Fripp doesn't really care if I like his stuff or not... All good!
