Post Stick Tune - Folsom Prison Blues
Yep, it had to be done. HAD to. Happy Wednesday, guys, as Scott's reign of terror continues... Bahahahaha is there no end to the madness? (nope!) Put together at the end of today's practice, I thought I'd do something a bit different today...

(Seriously though, Johhny Cash rocks - I had a lot of fun slamming this one together so I hope it makes someone laugh!)

Kind of a rebellion from this crap that I was working on (A rough draft of a proggy rock tune...)
(Little Big Muff Pi, A Malmsteen Strat and a Marshall combo, oooo!!) makes you almost want to listen to some country music...

I love Johnny Cash. And I especially love the kerchunking. Steve A would be so proud.

This whole song's energy comes from a kick-ass, driving bassline. Then you just tap out the melody one note at a time. And we do love the melody and this entire album is just so awesome, actually.

But then when you get to the breakdown, that was cool. Simple, yet rock solid.

An inspired cover, I think. It could have been a couple of verses longer, frankly. Well done!

Hey Stephen, thanks for checking it out! Thanks for the kind words about the tune! I thought I'd read down something a bit different that would sound funny on the instrument. Short and to the point! lol I transposed this one to 'G'. The recorded version is kind of in 'F' and I usually play it on guitar in 'E' . I chose 'G' 'cause I liked how it sounded. I thought this would be a cool one to drop on the Stickist community before I head underground for a few months of hardcore practice/study...

As for my rhythm playing, that's not "kerchunking" or whatever Steve calls it; It's just a percussive slap or two with the LH made into a sequence with my r58va riff. I thought it sounded cool, so I did it. I wouldn't know a "ker-chunk" from a "ka-boing" or a "ker-thud" but I DO know that I like how the rhythmic smacks drive the tune and really help keep time 'solid'. Tuck Andress and Raul Midon do it all the time, Ben Lacey is really extreme with that sort of thing and some of the stuff I saw Steve do with that sort of thing can really give a tune another dimension that 'solidifies' it rhythmically. Kaki and Justin King do it well, and there are many, many others... Groove enhancement I guess... The Stick is really cool in the way that you can really add a percussive element while not sacrificing anything else.

The Stick is cool.

Finally got a chance to listen to this (cant access sound cloud from work). This was really good! The whole thing sounded like two players picking rather than just one person, which is pretty cool, and kind of why I wanted to learn to play the stick in the first place.

The bass R58va, can you expound on? I get root, 5th, octave, but what is va?

It's why I wanted a Stick in the first place too. Seeing that video of Kevin Keith demo'ing the railboard, and then his Presonus video with that drummer made me get one almost instantly.... thanks for checking out my goofy cover haha

Sorry for the confusion, r58va = Root Fifth and Octave (8va). The pattern was something like this; 2 8th notes, 4 16th notes. "Ish" haha I hope that helps! (I am tuned to mirrored 4ths, though...)

E--------3---------3----------3-------------------------
A------------5----------x----------x--------------------
D------------5----------x----------x--------------------
G--------------------------------------------------------
C--------------------------------------------------------
F--------------------------------------------------------

Ah cool! I really like this take on an old standard. You should do a video - keep it tight to your hands. I want a see how you're making this happen.
