yep-that alternate fingering was a game changer for me-although i still ,sometimes, tend to use same finger for same note..still working on it though-i know it is something i need to avoid :)

Gotta say it, but as a sign of respect for the progress you've been making, and in several directions all at once. You're becoming a versatile performer and your various song projects seem to me more like alternative playing modes and techniques.

But I've to to say it. It would make a big difference, at least with songs like "Silence", if you used false fingering for repeated notes, which the song is full of. Legato is how the language goes, including song lyrics, so your listeners inner speech centers tend to "sing along" with your instrumental rendition.

Legato is part of the spoken language and a very satisfying part of a melody line. Never, almost never ever (never say never) (never say, "Never say never") use the same finger on successive notes, whether they be unison or 4ths apart on the same fret.

Then there's the drummer who comes along defying my best tips and blows me away.

Thank you so much for taking a listen, Emmett! And thank- you even more for the pointer... I'll take any help I can get! lol practice, practice, eh?

I listened to it again this morning via Sync through my car stereo. The swells came through better and for whatever reason reminded me of some of the backing parts to "The Boxer". That would be a cool way to real in listeners - mix parts from different songs from the same artist.

How are you getting that guitar tone on your Stick? Comes through clear regardless of media.

Thanks for the commentary, guys! As for my Stick tone, well I hit HARD! hahaha Probably too hard.. then it's a Boss GT100 for each side, cosm Fender Twin-ish sounding tone, then EQ'd in Logic, roll off a bunch of the low end and high end inaudible crap, and then I compress it. The Bass side is panned L -15 and the Melody side is panned R +15 Then on the master track it's EQ (slight midrange boost), and "Space designer" (A really great reverb plugin in Logic, I love it) and then "Ozone" for the win... Works well I think; Perhaps not how Sticks should be laid down, but it's how I do it! My current interface is an Apogee Ensemble, those things sound amazing...

The swells were definitely guitar, Strat into a big Muff pi into a marshall JCM 200 DSL 401 combo, miced with a sm57.

The Boxer, what a cool tune... so many tunes, so little time!

Thanks! Seems Fender models work well with Stick, the EQ method is something I read about as a tip for using Reverb that my Helix is conveniently setup for. I've used that Space Designer too. Always wished Apple would create an actual pedal version of their Multipressor, which can make my NS sound more like a bass guitar in multiple ways. The JC 120 modeler in the Helix works well with Stick too, which for me is a bit ironic as I have plugged my Stick into a real JC 120 and didn't like it. Cool thing about running guitar modelers into a PA is I find they work better with the bass side like you did here, vs using the real amps, which in many cases too much bass isn't good to be running anyway. Besides the JC 120, I've tried a Mesa Boogie Mark V Combo, and I currently own a Quiter Micropro. For my Grand, I like getting the same sound out of the higher pitched strings that the melody side is making.

Digging the smoothness of the runs on the bass side

And yes, I could hear your subtle melodic vibratos throughout. Adds another dimension, the man behind the machine. Trying to remember, do you use heavy vibrato on those blazing guitar rock lead lines? That goes a long way too.

I do, I'm a vibrato fanatic on guitar lol Malmsteen disciple :D I love vibrato, string vibratos (violin, Cello, Viola etc) just get me in the heart, I love 'em so I try to always do it... Mileage varies, though...

Not that smooth yet, I am still kind of "supporting" the Stick with my LH thumb, which is a major speed block for me. I created a DBro style holder, and then a non-angled belt hook, but to no avail. Not an issue when I play standing up, but yeah I gotta free my thumbs for seated...
I'll get it.

Also, be sure to Check out Boaz's version of the tune, very nice!

Scott, you're going to fast for me. There is only so much time in a day to listen to your stuff! Anyway, this song is close to my heart. I could bring up memories of listening to the family's 8-track player rather than the record player just to hear Simon and Garfunkel through my first pair of head phones, but I won't...but then I guess I already did. Then, the Comedian's funeral scene from the Watchmen movie(don't get me started on him!--Maybe Paigan0 will get that reference) with this song as a soundtrack was pretty emotional. Anyway, I liked your version a lot. I would agree that you could get more legato out of the melody if you chose to. I am not sure if I know what false fingering is, but I guess they mean repeated notes with alternating fingers striking the string.

As always, inspiring.

Mike

I pinch the sides of the pickup block lightly with my legs, works pretty well as a stabilizer for me.

Just got to listen to this one now. Really cool, and a lot of creativity in there! How about a real recording of some of this stuff? Your own polished and original arrangements of some of this songs... just saying... I just think you have some really great ideas that I would never have come up with, therefore, a lot to learn from. ;)
