Post Stick tune - Sound of Silence
It's Friday! Time for a song!

Not done too terribly poorly? ... lol Well I guess it depends on one's perspective! hahaha It's short, just a little chunk of the tune I thought I'd share for some fun. I am a big Paul Simon Fan, I was reading this down tonight and decided to record it (A lot easier than 50 ways to leave your lover) I guess it kind of became a sort of guitar/Stick duet... Stick was played in real time, as was the guitar. Volume swells were added afterwards, I wanted a different dimension to my cover...

Opening chords are Dmin Dmin/maj7 Dmin7 Dmin6, not really in the song but I am fond of that sort of descending Stairway to Heaven/James Bond sort of thing so I stuffed it in there... Working a lot on my melody side vibrato, I don't know if you can hear it. Also trying out some new bass side stuff, even a stolen Martino chord or two...

Anyways, as usual it was put together pretty quickly, but I hope y'all dig it. Anyways, have a great Friday!

Love this song, and I'm up in Michigan's upper peninsula right now with just my I-phone. The Stick sounds beautiful, but the guitar sounds like static. Might be an unfair comment not being at home with good monitors, but it sounds to me like the Stick part alone would work better :)

Haha :D not unfair at all! We are all allowed to have an opinion about music and I, for one, appreciate the honesty. I think that I wanted to do something to make the tune sound a bit more umm unique (to me) haha an experiment that "is what it is". Maybe the Stick part would work better on it's own, I don't know. It sounded lonely after I recorded it last night, so I thought I'd invest a minute or two into it and add a guitar part. Hehe the power of the "Big Muff Pi"...

:D Oh, I am not stopping and I am not going anywhere, and yep I like to think it's getting better! Doing my civic duty by terrorizing these forums with music, and hopefully forcing some discussion... Lol I love how everybody hears things differently, gets something different from a piece of music, like or dislike. As always, this was slammed together very quickly at the end of my practice session. Done for fun...hahaha

Thanks, guys for checking it out I appreciate that someone took the time to listen and then even comment on it! Positive, negative, it's all good! I am learning as I go so getting honest feedback, and listening critically are very important. As always, I am well aware of the shortcomings and there are always things to work on, so thanks again for listening guys!

Scott, rocking it out! I didn't mind the guitar volume swells but the song probably would have been fine without them. The very nature of experimentation means you try things and see how they work. Sometimes the song just needs more cowbell, even though it would be fine without it.

I love Simon and Garfunkel, by the way. I think all of their stuff lends itself well to the Stick. Thanks for sharing this one!

I listened to it again this morning via Sync through my car stereo. The swells came through better and for whatever reason reminded me of some of the backing parts to "The Boxer". That would be a cool way to real in listeners - mix parts from different songs from the same artist.

How are you getting that guitar tone on your Stick? Comes through clear regardless of media.

Thanks for the commentary, guys! As for my Stick tone, well I hit HARD! hahaha Probably too hard.. then it's a Boss GT100 for each side, cosm Fender Twin-ish sounding tone, then EQ'd in Logic, roll off a bunch of the low end and high end inaudible crap, and then I compress it. The Bass side is panned L -15 and the Melody side is panned R +15 Then on the master track it's EQ (slight midrange boost), and "Space designer" (A really great reverb plugin in Logic, I love it) and then "Ozone" for the win... Works well I think; Perhaps not how Sticks should be laid down, but it's how I do it! My current interface is an Apogee Ensemble, those things sound amazing...

The swells were definitely guitar, Strat into a big Muff pi into a marshall JCM 200 DSL 401 combo, miced with a sm57.

The Boxer, what a cool tune... so many tunes, so little time!

Gotta say it, but as a sign of respect for the progress you've been making, and in several directions all at once. You're becoming a versatile performer and your various song projects seem to me more like alternative playing modes and techniques.

But I've to to say it. It would make a big difference, at least with songs like "Silence", if you used false fingering for repeated notes, which the song is full of. Legato is how the language goes, including song lyrics, so your listeners inner speech centers tend to "sing along" with your instrumental rendition.

Legato is part of the spoken language and a very satisfying part of a melody line. Never, almost never ever (never say never) (never say, "Never say never") use the same finger on successive notes, whether they be unison or 4ths apart on the same fret.

Then there's the drummer who comes along defying my best tips and blows me away.
