Layla on Friday, Giant Steps on Saturday, and now Satin Doll on Sunday? It's almost a "song a day" kind of thing...

Again, I thought I'd record the results of this morning's practice session - This time a sort of mangling of "Satin Doll". It's really apparent how 'root note' oriented I am in my phrases over my solo, but it's a starting point. I was pretty much on the verge of falling apart reading this one down with the Steve A. patented "1235" scalar sequence under the head... Also, I tried to do the first pass of the melody with octaves in the right hand (needs work, I know) and then the second pass all on one string (High 'C' on the melody side...) as just single notes...

The solo section finds me outlining the changes using 3rds and a rhythmic sequence that I like in the Bass side, while doing my best to play key centres on the RH. Again, just a practice session I thought I'd share.

I recorded the A section in one pass, and then the solo section separately (Although I did play everything hands together as I recorded it, same as always.

Obviously, this could use some arranging and a bit of TLC rhythmically, but it is what it is. The result of about 45 minutes of messing around. I personally think it sounds pretty funny hahaha

lol Least loved of the batch of tunes I did yesterday, I just listened to this one again, might need a bit of TLC and then a re-attempt. Still it was fun, and for the time and effort I put in (not a lot), totally worth it...

Oooo lol took yet another listen to this; fraught with timing issues... sounds like some dork's sight-reading exercise haha I learned tons from reading this tune, but maybe from a subtractive point of view; the shortcomings have kind of led me to try some different things in the hopes of not having such a dead, lifeless rendition... Still, it was worth trying!

See, sometimes the results are less than stellar. Learn as we go...

I think it's grand seeing as how you are cutting that live. You have a great reference going forward. Don't be too hard on yourself, we know you can play.

I forget my tunes more than I care to admit and reference back to the SOTW all the time.

Hey, thanks for checking it out, Gene. Yeah I know that some of my forum posts read like I am filled with self-loathing, but it's not true. I just feel really strongly that if I want to play this instrument the way I feel like it should be played, I can't be lingering around for months on end toiling away at material where it feels like I'm not moving forward. That is unacceptable to me, time is precious. Getting to a level on the Stick where I can assimilate new material quickly has been a huge priority, some of it's better than others, but the point is that I have gotten to a stage where I can learn material on the Stick pretty efficiently. It's a lot of fun now. I am happy to patiently work at something, as long as it yields results. Wasting time drives me nuts... That "Free Hands" book is a goldmine, someone should do a FHF on that some time...

As far as "remembering" tunes, I really don't want to remember some of these the way I played 'em. Hahaha It's why I just read 'em down. They are just for practice. I can come back to them as I need/want to... (quickly) :D
