I applaud you for making a wonderful attempt at this Coltrane piece, regardless of what anyone else thinks. Bravo!

I really like a "tell us how you really feel" style of posting on message boards, it's best served with absolutely no positive feedback whatsoever, and a condescending tone, delivered from someone who probably can't play even my dogshit version of the piece! I can't wait to do my own version of a "tell us how you really feel" type post on some dumbfounded dipshit's painstakingly misguided efforts towards evolving his/her playing! Heck, I will be sure to even show how it could be done better on guitar, complete with a scathing harmonic analysis, an elitist attitude, and a proper arrangement. And if said dipshit has the bravery to get behind a kit and play drums to their piece, OMG will THAT be the beginning of an annihilation! Or violin, or bass or dare to add guitar or lap steel or even midi loops! Musical evisceration if they dare to even begin to attempt a bit of music and share it! I won't care if it's Stanley Jordan himself,I will go fucking Dalek on the next hopeful Stick/tapping attemptee who has the audacity to share some playing, 'cause THAT IS BAD! WE don't want that sort of thing here! Bahaha

Naw, just kidding! I actually really like music, and like it a lot when people try their best so I will just keep on doing what I do. I am a big fan of the Chapman Stick, and I understand how challenging it is to learn to play this thing, 'cause I am a lifelong music student.

And we wonder why the forum is dead, people think Stickists are elitist pricks, and the classifieds section is filled with people ditching their brand new tapping gear?

Hahaha damned entertaining... y'all can go back to levelling up your Druid or whatever now bahahaha

lol what?

Sorry, just making fun of Stickrad. I have a bent sense of humour, what can I say... lol

I'm a beginner at Stick, not new to music. Thanks for the lesson I guess, but I think I am on the right track, fella... Here's a version I did quite some time ago (Not Stick, as I didn't even know what a Stick was back then...); If any part of it sucks it's because I played everything on it. It's primitive too, and needs work without a doubt. I'm really looking forward to hearing a Stickrad version... heh

Scott, do you play live at all? Guitar performances count too.

Yep, pretty much every weekend at the very least. Fill in stuff, studio stuff, whatever. It's only Grande Prairie Alberta Canada, so it doesn't really count but I play out a lot, guitar, bass and drums, not Stick ('cause I'm terrible). Not for free, either. Last year it was all I did as I quit my day job... mostly top 40 stuff, pop country. Been doing it on and off as a living since I finished school in 1995.

Nice. You should start adding the Stick into the mix! No better way to progress than through the constant stress test of performance.

Agreed, and that is the plan.
I have a group that I play Stick with for fun, I basically function as a bassist who does a wee bit of lead/rhythm type work in that context. I'd like to get a duo together with a drummer, but I'm not quite there chops-wise. I did a couple of open mics that were pretty well received (no other Stick players were there haha), The Stick has been the most challenging musical endeavour I have ever undertaken... I also have a small group of fellas who play "tap only", I am the only Stick player, two guys are guitarists, the other plays a Warr, and one is a bassist and we have a keyboardist who pays for snacks, it's fun. Kind of a free- improv "share your ideas and jam for each other" type thing. Really diverse influences from Primus to Stanley Jordan to Billy Sheehan and Jennifer Batten and Tool...

I am a big believer in pressure testing; so constantly posting clips, recording and videotaping is a small part of that. Jamming with real humans and playing open mics is another aspect... It's funny, when I first started taking Skype lessons with Steve I felt really, really insecure about the Stick. No fault of Steve's as he was very nice in the lessons... Hadn't felt that way (insecure/nervous) in decades, it was a weird sensation... as time went on, I found that kind of feeling cropping up all the time, and my Stick tunes would trainwreck, or at the very least be really, really fragile when I went through them. Upon reviewing early clips of the stuff I was trying to do, and comparing it to what I can do now, especially knowing the effort that I put into this stuff. All worthwhile. Getting to know the instrument.

I'd say I'm about another year or so away from being really ready to start showcasing myself as an instrumentalist (beginner level) with the Stick. Some guys have a natural knack for Stick it would seem... not me, haha I gotta train, train, train...

So yeah, when I post a clip like this it's not in an attempt to promote myself, it's more about getting some discussion going on a musical topic I am interested in and maybe getting some insight into the challenges the instrument presents depending on the music being tackled... and maybe someone else with similar struggles can glean some insight also...

Totally liked the Stick version better. Totally! I used to play that (on bass) w/ a guitarist...make those changes stand out, on bass, at that speed? Whew! Great job Scott I don't care what anybody says. I say "Fuck". Guess some people never heard of non-keyboard. The whole idea (of that tune, TO ME) is to hear the changes without a chordal accompiantment. But WTF do I know.

I applaud both the idea and execution. This reminds me of a heated thread on Facebook about cover songs. One camp thought covers needed to be carbon copies. Another thought one should make a cover your own. I think it depends on the context. If you are in a cover band and the audience expects a carbon copy then deliver a copy. Otherwise, explore and learn. I think you are clearly in the second context here and I enjoyed what you did with the tune.
