Post Re: Bird on a wire
I am amazingly completely ignorant of this song. I googled it to find out it's a Leonard Cohen song. So, I like Cohen but this was new to me.

So that out of the way, this was so awesome! I loved your playing and your singing. Your Stick sounded very "Sticky," in that the bass sound in particular sounded just pure quintessential bass Stick sound. That's why we love this thing and yours sounded so warm and brown. I don't know what effects you're using on the bass side. It sounds very minimal yet really warm. Are you putting much on it at all?

I love your voice, too, Olivier, which also has a nice warm, brown sound to it. Thanks for sharing this and very well done!

(I will check out Cohen's version later and get back to you.) Cheers! Happy New Year!

The bass side is slightly compressed by a TC Nova Dynamics stomp box. TC has stopped production but the nova multiband compressor is amazing. The melody side goes through a Zoom G3X multieffects. That's all when I'm tracking.

When I mix in Protools, I add quite a bunch of plugins. First in the chain is Bomb Factory's UREI 1164 emulation. Again, 2 dbs of optocompression. Signal then goes through a 4 bands Waves renaissance EQ to get some highs. Then the secret weapon: Wave's MaxBass, to add some thump.

Finally, there's a multiband compressor and a limitier/maximizer on the master fader.

But nothing is over processed. The ACTV2 pickup has a beautiful bass sound. I don't change my strings more than once a year and the processing just reveals the quality of the Stick's natural sound.

Best

Olivier

Congratulations Olivier, very original interpretation of this Cohen's song. This composer was better and better getting older. His concert in London in 2008 was just amazing and so peaceful. For few days it was available for free on the net and I downloaded it...it's just a superb gift from heaven.

Thanks, Olivier! I'm a big fan of Wave's plugins myself! I record everything direct in and then apply effects in Pro Tools, much as you're describing. I use and love the Wave's Bass rider plugin to even out my crappy uneven dynamics (a newbie's must-have!), and then Wave's CLA (Chris Lord Alge's) Bass plugin, becuase it has easy control of bass & treble, and then delay and reverb and stereo width right in one plugin. I've recently discovered the wondrous beauty of the Wave's SSL 4000 Collection, and several of its subplugin templates for bass can give any bass sound a growl that would make Getty Lee turn his head and go "Eh?" (Try the "Joe West Bass Growler Aggro" for optimum growl, or any of the Joe West settings to taste.)

I will have to check out the Wave's MaxBass, which I have never bothered to play with. So many wondrous plugins to play with, but you are using them very tastefully. Thanks so much for the info!

Inspiring, as always Oli. You're a juggler, a gypsy and a gambler. My kind of leader. Thank you for taking the time to share this.
