Hi all,

After some recent conversations about examples of Stick in a band context, I started talking to Coup Detroit (the band I was in from 92 until around 2010) guitarist and founder Dan Holmes about getting some of our recorded material up on SoundCloud. We opted to start with our 2007 CD release "War of the Raptors" which was also our first set of recorded material where I played Stick pretty much 100% of the time.

The tune below is "Raptors" featuring Julie Marcos on vocals, Dan Holmes on guitar, myself on Stick, and Scott Burks on Drums.

More to come!

Cool tune! Nice hook, and a fun groove! No Muzak! Nice arrangement, good playing all around! I enjoyed this immensely, thanks for sharing!

Thanks! That was always an extremely fun tune to play live.

No prob. This is a really cool tune, and really showcases the Stick in a way that I think is totally awesome! Plus, there is so much more to it than just being a vehicle to showcase the Stick. It rocks! Thanks again for sharing, dude!

I am really, really disappointed that nobody here seems to comment on actual creative works.

Looking forward to more!

Dan Holmes was the real architect behind virtually all of the Coup Detroit material and I owe him a lot of credit for putting my Stick learning on overdrive.

I know I've told this story before but I always feel I was fortunate. While I've heard horror stories from people bringing their Stick into a band for the first time and being met with hostility (especially from guitarists), I had the exact opposite experience.

Dan has always described himself as a writer who plays guitar as opposed to a guitarist who writes. I had my first Stick for a grand total of 24 hours back in 1999 when I brought it to practice to show everyone. When I showed it to Dan and described how it worked, I could see the mad scientist look in his eyes immediately as the light bulbs started exploding all around his head. I mentioned that if I practiced every day I might be able to work it into a tune or two in about six months. He shook his head and said "No no ... you have to bring that back tomorrow. I've already got some ideas."

To this day, the guy has never strapped it on and tried it but he had an uncanny ability to write for it.

Oh man, that's awesome! I am envious of you and Mike Kemp; his Liquid Nixon project looks like it's a good playing situation. (bass, guitar and keys and then Stick on top of that!) Band Chemistry is everything, eh?

Yeah, I AM a guitarist and I hate playing with other guitar players some times. lol Even on guitar! I find that they are literally unable to even fathom the concept of leaving some sort of space, and playing with a keyboardist or any other extended range instrument (or even a second guitarist) leaves 'em butthurt... meh, whatever. Of course, the pool of guitarists we have to draw from here where I live is not too great...

I do find that the Stick can be a challenge to be heard when dealing with a clanky toned overpicker... (It's why I MUST have a volume pedal in my Stick Rig) lol

Glenn, had to wait until I got home to listen to SoundCloud.

This was an excellent song. I enjoyed the lead vocalist's voice--she has a great rock voice. This song had lots of hooks in it as well.

Plus, this song fricking rocked. Both the bass and guitar had a forward driving motion throughout. Definitely showing Stick as a happy fellow band member. And it fricking rocked--did I mention that?

Also, great story about Dan Holmes as well. Thanks for sharing this Glenn!

And more to come? Awesome!

Glenn, I remember this album! You guys should put it on Bandcamp. Cool stuff. For anyone who doesn't remember this band, their name sounds kind of like "coup d'etat." Nice play on words.

Cool Song
Thanx for the motivation to give the stick another try in a band. It was my post some months ago, when i had some trouble with the guitarrist and keyboarder.
Times are changing and next week i will give the stick another try in a different band.
The bands name is "Raptor200"
Greetings
Gerald
