Re: Metheny Trio tour
I'm a big fan of Metheny. He's one of those guitarists that I find fascinating to watch.
Having said that, he's one of the few artists that I've taken a CD back to the shop and demanded a refund on the grounds that it was aural cr*p! anyone who has heard 'Zero Tolerance For Silence' will understand why.
Who's playing bass in the trio (I assume that there's a bass player!)

Re: Metheny Trio tour
Christian McBride on bass and Antonio Sanchez on drums. I have "zero tolerance" I will occasionally throw it on to just remind myself of methenys avantgard side. Yes it's a difficult record to say the least. not my favorite side of metheny however, that side of his playing does create interest in more traditional settings. his fascination with free jazz can be perplexing to many but i like a lot of "song x". I view "tolerance" as being as out as he can get (i hope).
The trio is Pat at his best imho.

Re: Metheny Trio tour
So a few years back I spoke with Pat and asked him about Zero T. He said it's all part of what he hears. The other music is filtered from the massive amount of sounds he hears. ZTFS was voted by a guitar mag. as the hardest guitar record to listen to, ever. Strangely around the same time, he recorded the Missouri Sky CD which is one of the most beautiful recordings ever. His music runs the gamut. He's a great guitarist but I think Pat's compositional and arranging skills are without peer. You'll find no bigger fan of his music than this writer. I play about 20 of his tunes on Stick (2 on the new DVD) A major highlight for me about 8 years ago, was giving him a Stick lesson and jamming (Stick/gtr. duet) with him on two tunes.

Steve A Show off ............ only joking! what a great accolade to say that you have played with Pat Metheny! I still think that ZTFS is an insult to anyone who buys it with the assumption that they will be hearing something worthy of the Metheny legacy. It should have a sticker saying 'WARNING! does not contain anything that the western civilisation considers to be musical' and be available at budget price only. Just my opinion. And I really did take it back and get my money back!

As well, Pat stood behind that recording and offered refunds to the dissatisfied. SA

What could he do with it after a lesson? I'm a huge fan too and man would I have loved being a fly on your wall that day! -Eric

Re: Metheny Trio tour
Pat liked the Stick a lot and showed a cool curiosity about the possibilities. He was intuitively playing some nice ambient harmonic ideas within a few minutes. He also said that he wished he could take off touring and such for 5 years and really study the guitar.
