Post Re: Bob Culbertson
A few years back i did a Stick Night where Bob Culbertson was one of the players.

After the gig I complimented Bob on his playing. He thanked me and gave me a copy of "Cafe San Francisco". I got home late that night but decided to listen to one track of the disc before going to bed.

I ended up staying up all night listening to the entire disc over and over.
I've always admired his playing but that CD was a side of Bob I didn't know existed.

Bob is one of my greatest inspirations and he is a wonderful human being.
This guy just loves to play and it shows in his music and his spirit.

The joy of the Stick community is that we are still small enough to reach out and touch each other but large enough to spread our music throughout the world.

If I can just further hijack my own thread (!)

Kevin - I'd never heard of you before, but I saw a video of you playing and it was a groove like I've never heard before on the stick - totally awesome! I must check out more of your playing. Definitely inspiring!

Wow!
Thanks for the compliments. It really means a lot to know that you enjoy what I do.

The Stick is just such a big sounding instrument!
Those low notes just ring and the tone just inspires me to write grooves, but what makes it so cool is that with the Stick you still have a free hand!

Before I was gigging on Stick I saw Don Schiff playing at a club in LA. Now there's some inspiration!
He started the set with the tune "Rainfall". I remember thinking, Maaaaan! That was funky!

I immediately started experimenting with bass grooves but the challenge was to be able to play them one handed, and to experiment with multiple rhythm's. Its important to me to have my right hand available for chords, etc.

Thankfully my fingers are long and fairly disciplined from the days of upright bass so my left hand took to the Stick way faster than my right hand did.

Truthfully it's still that way to this day.

Hi twizzle,

What I love about Bob's playing is the way he integrates concepts from the guitar into The Stick without trying to "imitate" the guitar. It's hard to explain, but of all the players I've seen, I think he brings more of the guitar into the instrument than anyone else has.

Indeed.
Bob also makes the Stick sound like one unified instrument, even when he's playing four parts at once. Bob's fretboard knowledge is most impressive.

I agree.

Bob can make it a unified sound or a counterpart kind of vibe.

There's a tune on Cafe san Francisco called "Blue".
Compositionally its an awesome blues vibe but Bob just rips on this cut. Its a
wonderful soulful vibe.

I had never known Bob to play this style. He's got a big bag of skills to pull from.

I still feel guilty, I haven't made the time to edit the video footage of Bob playing at the Sydney gigs back in November, but I'll attempt to do it soon and get it up on YouTube. Some fantastic moments, I assure you!
