What a great post, you would never guess that this kid would someday become rock royalty. Going to California, no matter how many times I hear it , it still gets to me. Just a beautiful piece of music.

Re: Jimmy Page, the early years, REAL early
Funny thing is I watched this during lunch at work and had it stuck in my head for the next several hours!

Re: Jimmy Page, the early years, REAL early
I wonder if there is a very early John Paul Jones video out there.

Re: Jimmy Page, the early years, REAL early
A lady I work with is originally from Scotland, happens to be in a local choir/singing group that performs old English Madrigals and similar shows. I asked her about this "Skiffel Music" and she said it was real popular in the UK in the late 50's through the early 1960's. Forgot the name, but it was made popular by one particular UK musician of that time. Very much like American bluegrass/country. This must be where Page got his unorthodox style of slipping in some major pentatonic scales into his solos, which are more typical of country/bluegrass than rock.
No wonder Plant is touring with Allison Krauss. Those who object or find it way off kilter I don't believe understand where Led Zeppelin really got their influences from. I found this video looking up "Gallows Pole" videos, and found some "Leadbelly" postings on Youtube. More of an early blues style, but reminds me of some bluegrass music I've seen on TV. That song's original author is unknown, but Leadbelly's "Gallis Pole" (spelling?) was more well known until LZ recorded their version. Check those out if you get a chance. John Paul Jones if I recall correctly belongs to some Mandolin society and also performs bluegrass.
This is the kind of thing where Youtube earns it's keep. You can read about a famous rockband's influences, but it's even better if you can actually hear and/or see some of these early influences yourself.

It was probably Lonnie Donegan. A lot of british rockers site him as an influence.
