Post Big Bear leaves the cave....
Hi Folks.

Friends sometimes call me Big Bear, because I'm not very good in the morning, in fact I don't do mornings. Takes me at least one elephant gun coffee to wake up.....

But I digress. I have come out of the cave of introversion, that was my uni studies and have finally broke the hiatus on a teflon year.

What it taught me is that, geez I'm a tight arse player who really needs to open up and try some new shit. I once asked Greg about this, right before he was going to release the dvd. I told him that I learn everything note or note, but as relaxed as poss. What I've since learned is that even relaxed wrote playing can box you in to a corner. I should've known of course....

Time to start getting some motors down and just letting rip a bit more. Then reverse hands...

Any other suggestions for loosening up?

Cheers

Hey Rad, good to hear!
All I can say is I'm in some middle ground at present where I for want of a better term " think less & play more".
In fact I never play anything the same way twice although many of them have now been done many times in public now at open mics and markets etc.
Its really good fun to be within a framework of sorts, the key & the general theme , but just thinking Ahead a little bit to " what if I go here instead of there".
I like the freedom of it and think its adds a real sponteneity so long as it holds together. Sometimes nice ideas pop out unexpectedly. Not being a highly schooled musician with several other lives and People to manage I have not a lot written down though I keep a rough study journal going.
Anyway, good to hear from you, get at it, just play, play anything, make it up! My unsophisticated take on Things. b

Turn on the radio and play along with the first song you hear...

Other than drugs, which I don't think you need for loosening up, I find that writing stuff is the quickest path to "try[ing] some new shit."

There's nothing more new than shit you make up!

Now, I don't know if you run to the composition, or to the performance, side of the musical educational process. Those in comp tend to also be the theory buffs, and those in performance tend to be the practice nuts. Then there are the music teachers, who fit somewhere in the middle of the composers and the performers.

My own experience as a music major at Kansas State University was that there was about 60% education majors, and 38% performance majors, and then 2% or lower that were the composition peeps.

If you're the type that learns things note by note and by rote, I suspect that you're in the performance side of the house. Cross over to the comp side and indulge your inner composer!

Do a collaboration with another person (either comp or performance), and that will also force you out of your comfort zone and give you another person besides just yourself to disappoint. Or not to--not letting another musician down on a shared endeavor is a very powerful motivator.

Or learn another cover tune (I'm counting even Bach concertos as cover tunes for purposes of this conversation). But same old shit, different composer. Maybe YOU drive the song creation train, and then you'll find and create the new stuff.

Just some thoughts from the 2%--I have the highest respect for both the performance majors and the teachers, but neither is the path I chose for myself for music.

Best of luck, Stickrad! Rock it out! Get out of the cover cave!

Hi Peeps.

I did reply to this yesterday but somehow didn't press send. Anyhoo...

Thanks for all your comments, I'm going to pursue each suggestion.

Hey Pirate , what you said about playing stuff differently all the time, I am starting to do that a little and definitely feel compelled to try that some more.

Hey Stephen, I've been studying composition at UTas for 3 years now and actually started playing stick as a way to get my compositions together. I've been enthused to write some new stuff and am slowly moving away from my usual default material.

GP, what a great idea..... Playing on the fly, such good medicine I would've thought...

Thanks again for the inspiration lads. :D

Er, I thought you were on the perf side. Going over to comp is a way for the perfs to try something new. But if you're already one, then that's not so useful advice.

So, then I revise my advice and say "play along with the radio" like Alain and Gene did. That's good advice. You can always switch your stations if you need a different genre.

Personally, when I get into a rut, I make myself work in genres that I don't normally do. I always learn a lot when I have to jam to country music, for example. (Right before killing myself, that is. I kid!)

Stephen, you're a tenacious poster!

Thanks me old, I'll try not to kill myself with the country music jams, as well.

huh, thought I posted this but I guess I forgot to hit "Submit"

I find that playing along to longer, "jam" songs is helpful.
that way I can keep improvising/changing little bits to the same progression and come up with new things without loosing a groove.
