Post Bob's "Beatles on The Stick" - new featured CD
Hi everyone,

What a great time to be looking for new Stick music to listen to, not only has Steve's new Sticktet CD just come out, but Bob Culbertson has just released his new Beatles on The Stick CD. Both are now featured CDs at stick.com.

Bob's new recording offers 18 Beatles tunes arranged for solo performance and recorded live in his studio. Many of the tracks are also available on YouTube so you can see the magic behind the sounds you're hearing.

For more info, including a complete track listing and two videos from the recording, check out:

http://www.stick.com/features/cd/

All full-length CDs at from Stick Enterprises are now just $12...

That's a killer. I picked up a copy at FHA and it's in heavy rotation around here.

My mother-in-law is a HUGE Beatles fan. Has been since she was a kid. We bought a coy of this at FHA as a gift, and had Bob sign it to her.
Problem is, the cd's so damned good that it's going to be hard giving it up.
Good thing SE has cd's on special. Ordering a couple of Dale's, too. (And if you didn't see my post about it already: Steve's new cd is fantastic.)

I know how you feel. And it's even more intense live...really, it was a bit spellbinding seeing all those monsters play live.
You can have 2 reactions:
1) I quit.
2) I can't wait to practice.
The great things is that every member of the faculty at FHA were (and are) so accessible, and so down-to-earth, AND very good at relaying information that you can't help but come away inspired, and have #2 as a reaction.
Wait, that doesn't sound right...

Imagine how I felt, when I was his roadie at the Buskers Festival in my hometown (2010). I saw him play 2 sets a day for 5 days and he NEVER played his music the same way. He would ALWAYS twist his arrangements upside down (and round and round) Mind boggling! :o

Yeah Bob is in a class by himself. His hands are like racehorses and what is he - about six foot four? Besides dwarfing the imposing Grand Stick,he seems to have achieved what most of us just strive towards and that is to play any damn thing he can dream up with impeccable timing and then some. I call that "musical headroom". To mere mortals his technical command borders on prestidigitation. Moreover,he possesses a depth & breadth of musical idioms most of us will never gather. And when he gets deep in the zone it's like he is navigating a burning ship through treacherous waters. He doesn't make me want to quit - he makes me want to give it my best shot.

I know this is tongue in cheek but I have heard people I know seriously say this after seeing brilliant guitarists, bassists, etc. This always boggled me a bit. That's an attitude that simply doesn't exist in my DNA.

I generally walk into any situation with the mindset that "I can" until it's proven to me otherwise. Even then, the worst I usually walk out with is "ok ... maybe I can't do this yet but I'll revisit later when I have more skills" :-)

Funny things:
Drumming great Terry Bozzio quit playing ride cymbals altogether after he realized that he'd never be able to play one like Tony Williams.
Jazz drumming god Joe Morello started out playing violin. When he heard Heifitz, he was so floored that he gave up the violin. He wanted to play orchestral percussion, but his eyesight was so bad that he was never going to be able to see the sheet music and conductor clearly, so his teacher suggested he switch to drum set. And he almost never played jazz; his recollection is of thinking "I didn't want to play that whorehouse music!"
I don't share these stories to be contentious; I agree with Glenn's attitude. But on the other hand, sometimes realizing one's limitations will lead you down your own path to uniqueness. In Terry Bozzio's case, I'm tempted to say it was a case of "doing the right thing for the wrong reason", but regardless, he certainly ended up unique.
What a nice little intellectual exercise this is.
;)
