Will do Jeff.
She played a concert last night. This was the opening tune and it that room it just sounded sublime. She was really terrific all the way around and a very entertaining lecturer as well.

Re: Interlochen Fingerstyle Guitar Workshop 2014
Nice way to play in nine and still feel it. Two downbeats at the beginning of each bar (one way of looking at it), "turning over" the meter each time. The odd numbered rhythm actually reinforces the "one" beat, emphasizing each bar.
Pianist Gary Husband uses this device for various odd numbered rhythms on "A Meeting of Spirits", his CD album interpreting (and transforming) John McLaughlin's songs from "Inner Mounting Flame". Gary has been Alan Holdsworth's drummer on several notable CDs, and IMO his piano skills are on an even higher level (incredible "living" jazz explorations). In some songs he shuffles forward the downbeat with even greater sophistication, inserting an extra sixteenth note (or three) before the first beat.
Anything to feel the "swing" and to avoid "Balkanization" (those intricate, locked in folk dances).

Tell you what. It doesn't matter if you're a Stick player, guitar player, or any other kind of player. Four days with absolute master musicians is such an absolute shot in the arm. Juber's formal education is in musicology so his masterful playing and absolute command of harmony and theory is matched by his knowledge of music history. All of this comes out in his lectures. Muriel was just fun. She's studied and played with some of the absolute greats of the guitar (Chet Atkins, Tommy Emmanuel, etc) and really embraces the rich history of fingerstyle guitar.
It's always amazing to me how much these events not only improve my guitar playing but my Stick playing as well.
Off to practice.

Off to practice. That's a keeper quote. Very, very cool. Off to practice, indeed. -Eric

I love it...she's really good...and Emmett is right, it's a 9/8 rythm she's using to play this song.

Glenn, Thanks for the posts and for your great writing that makes you feel like you were there. I love this piece and that big Thud the HarpGuitar gets is amazing. Her artificial harmonics while fingerpicking are amazing. Lenny Breau used that technique and I was fortunate to have a guitar teacher in college, Marty Moore, who studied under Joe Pass and Pat Martino, teach them to me. if you watch the video closely you can too! Beautiful cascading technique.
I loved my experience at Interlochen at the Stick seminar. I believe it is one of the most peaceful and musical spots on Earth and joins New York, New Orleans, San Francisco and Sedona, AZ IMHO as one of the vortexes of musical spirituality.
Your dedication to the Stick community is unparalleled. thank you so much, Dave Brosky

Re: Interlochen Fingerstyle Guitar Workshop 2014
While eating breakfast with LJ, Tom Clippert and his friend Jesse, Jesse asked me some questions about the Stick and made reference to this guy he had seen playing the Stick at the 2010 guitar workshop: Ever since then I've heard many references on campus to your performance in that gazebo when certain people see me wearing my Stick t-shirt. I'm thinking that's the ideal spot for a live performance. Great time, brought home several CD's and material to practice, and I'm going to place an order for LJ's book. There's an old saying that goes "everyone in the world is three people from knowing each other". I could definitely see the influence Paul McCartney had on LJ. At breakfast he would not only talk about music, but his family as well. He spoke highly of both what his wife and daughter were accomplishing. Outside of LJ and Muriel, I also thought Tom and Matt did a stellar job teaching. I ended up figuring out how to play that hard to reach chord pattern I asked Tom about in his arrangement we played in the ensemble - had to hold my "indestructible" Martin like a classical guitar to pull it off. That was one seminar that will be hard to top.

Beautiful cascading technique. Yeah I've always loved that. She covered that in one of her workshops actually. Man! I do get it but when I do it, it is glacially slow. I've seen Tommy Emmanuel just rip that technique. She also mentioned Lenny Breau several times. I don't recall if she studied with him, performed with him, or both. She has quite a resume. She managed to study for several years with Chet Atkins and had a monthly gig in NYC with Les Paul for a while. That's just the tip of the iceberg. Most importanly though, she and LJ are great teachers. They did a master class for us one day and there was a lot to learn there regardless of whether you were in the hot seat or just listening in.

The limited edition photo book "A Guitar With Wings" with CD that I ordered from Laurence Juber arrived today. Pretty much covers his early years growing up through a few present day, with the bulk of it centered around his years with McCartney.
