It's your call. It might be beneficial to have one of the instructors walk through a string change with you OR, you could just change them now.. It's a win - win.

I'm wondering if my Electro-harmonix battery powered headphone amp will suffice, or should I acquire the Behringer plug in type mentioned earlier. Any advice would be appreciated.

Headphone amps are the order of the day. Anything lightweight you can plug headphones into is ideal.

Here's the one I use for my stick and headphone. The sounds is great with headphone. Without it...NO. With a guitar YES...

That does look like a nice portable amp.

We are requesting that everyone please bring a headphone amp or an amp that can accommodate headphones as there will be too many Stickists in a single room competing for sonic space.

No capes! No amps!

Nady has a great, low cost headphone amp that utilizes a rechargeable battery although it has to be run in mono.
