Thanks again. I hadn't thought to consider inversions by octave shapes before. I am taking the SLOW path to learning (18 mo. son in the house). I have been playing my stick in a band setting, but am quite far away from any solo presentation. Mainly playing bass parts with light melody "flavoring" or simple chord progressions. I am working on some parts soloing in melody over simple bass parts.
can you consider some good simple guidance?

Re: Stick Science - The Bas(t)ics pt 2
Dan, I feel like a good progression for soloing over a bass groove is to start out by phrasing your melodies to the bass groove. That way, the hand separation isn't so extreme that you lose it out right. As you get used to that, try changing the phrasing a little bit, slowly expanding your rhythmic and melodic comfort zone beyond just the bass phrasing until you feel really at home with the groove.
