Re: Dave Brosky plays for One of the Biggest Celebrity Chefs
The old adage that every gig is different and has it surprises- played true on Saturday.
The other adage is to know your crowd really helped.
First off,
Mario Batalli was extremely down to earth, knowledgeable, and just nice! Glenn, I had your post inside the book which I got signed thanks to my inside people. In addition, when the moment was right and infront of the very long line which they called by groups of 20, (500 total) I jumped the line to tell him of my Stick Buddy in Leland and about his home in Northport,
he gave me a big hand shake ( no kidding he has big hands- if time permitted I would have suggest he go with a 10 string Grand
)
and a wink to acknowledge his Michigan roots! At that point I got the gentle tug on my arm and saw two big security guys behind the lady who booked us! My other musician friends there laughed and said "only Dave!"
It was a media circus with all the "point people" buzzing from the time Mike and I got there early. They had a very serious local sound company for wireless, video and mutliple flat screen transmissions. Very limited PR due to a fear that they would get more than they could handle, and still there were throngs of crowds. Autographs were limited to an online pre-event ticket which went into 500.
So, Mike and I,
Stick 2 It!, were in the VIP holding tent to soothe and calm and entertain the crowds. I loaded the book with famous Italian songs, which we got requests for like the Tarantella, Return to Sorrento (Torna a Surriento), Speak Softly Love from the Godfather, and That's Amore! We were treated like Kings, and got wonderful commnets from the crowd.
On the Stick, we got the usual "what is that thing?" right out of the chute, but a nice follow up "I'll have to look that up!" One person knew who it was and told his little boy "that's a Chapman Stick" hey, start em young for our next generation of Stick Players! It was really crazy though, we shared the tent with a magician and a "Mario Batali" look alike who was a really funny actor who went up to people.
All in all, it was really cool to be in integral part of and see behind the scenes at a major event like this, and a lot of people came away with recipes, a memory, an autograph, and more importantly had their minds and ears opened to Emmett's wonderful instrument!
Hey, I had a "captive" audience!
take care,
Dave Brosky
