Ok - I don't know all of Frank's work. Which arrangement/recording? I know he did an orchestral version of it. If I hear the version you're talking about I should be able to nail down the sound.
Cool guy - Frank. We had an impromptu battle over a Synclavier guitar on stage when I first met him.
That's another story.

Sorry to derail the thread, but just this afternoon it occurred to me to look into how FZ may have produced that sound, and, knowing he used the Synclavier, and just reading that you were deeply involved in it, I had to ask. So, thanks for any info that you may be able to provide!

G-Spot Tornado, off of Jazz From Hell

Quote:
"G-Spot Tornado," assumed by Zappa to be impossible to play by humans, would be performed by Ensemble Modern on the concert recording The Yellow Shark. The track ends in nearly two minutes of applause.

But, it is humanly possible,

I can think of several ways to produce that sound. Frank probably did it this way:
The way that the keyboard reacted was under your complete control.

For example - I used to take the pressure information and channel it to change the pitch of whatever sound I was using.

Imagine a nicely sampled grand piano on the keys. Lean on a note and the pitch slides or swoops up one octave depending on how fast/hard you hit the note. You could precisely modify the curve of that pressure information, if you so chose. You could also control exactly what pitch the slide or swoop would arrive at.

That swoop that you hear on the melody on Frank's tune could have been done that way. He could have just dialed in a fast swoop that arrived on the pitch he wanted, adjusted the pressure to be quite light and then played the melody.

If you can't do that with your own synthesizer controller then you might use an envelope generator to shape the pitch movement and just direct it at the sample/sound you are using - controlling the pitch. By changing the shape of the envelope you then create your own curve of pitch movement. There's lots of ways of doing that sound.
Back to my videos - hope to get some done soon.
