Hi Brett, I just gave the disc a first spin today. I really like how varied the tracks are and the sound is great. Looking forward to digging deeper into it, and thanks for the nod.

If I ever hear anyone say that you can't play fast walking bass in inverted 5ths again, I'll just point them your way. Of course, Steve has been doing this for years, and it's exciting the first time you hear someone do it. If two or more people can do it, then it can become a movement. It proves that it's not just that first guy's unique capability at work.

There's a lot of validation in your new record, in this and other areas of jazz tapping.

It's been a lot of fun and I've gained a lot of respect for everyone who has gone through the process of recording and releasing a cd. The future is bright, this is continuing to get more and more fun!!

I just gave Brett Bottomley's new "Journeys" CD a spin and discovered a polished and disciplined jazz quartet that nevertheless manages to play with abandon. There's every combination of unison themes, sax & Stick melody, Stick and vibes, vibes and sax, and tight phrasing with drums. There are many different rhythms and moods too, and all well within jazz expectations.

The tenor sax man gets a raw and dry sound almost like bari sax (to my ears). He is obviously steeped in an honest and transparent jazz "ethic" which seems to be ever present in his solos and vamps.

Some highlights for me:

- Track 1: A "smokin'" Stick bass rhythm.

- Track 2: Brett's solo with sophisticated harmonic changes seeming to go sharp, Lydian style. He gets a subdued jazz guitar type lead melody sound.

- Track 5: A challenging Stick solo with improv melody and walking bass.

- Track 6: Samba de Palo (Stick Samba) sounds like the genuine article from Brazil, and the Stick bass and chordal vamps are a strong part of it. Almost sounds as if a rhythm acoustic guitar were present.

The Stick's slower LH arpeggios of bass/chord patterns are done tastefully, adding another dimension to the album. Of course this is a "tried and true" Stick technique, but it still takes you a long way, also breaking up a set nicely.

Congratulations to Brett on this all original, Stick featured jazz album, and for putting together a band of outstanding jazz musicians. Best, Emmett.
