It's a real shame there are not long videos of him playing the Stick

Sean was the main (if not solo?) guy for a Stick workshop in Seattle, which Louis the organizer can expand upon, and it was an interesting session - very prog'ish w/odd time signatures emphasis. I believe he was working on his doctorate at the time (so long ago - sorry, its fuzzy) but he was very quiet, humble and straightforward (academic) for the duration. The funny but odd thing was Sean admitted freely that he wasn’t very sure that he wanted to participate in the whole thing - but there he was (kudos, Louis!). I seem to remember that he had an album or two under his belt, he was maybe primarily a bass player and as such that he had published a book of Jaco transcriptions? I haven't followed his career. I probably have some of his exercises and sheet music that he brought along somewhere in my Stick stuff notebooks. Regardless...RIP Sean. -Brian

From what I knew of Sean based on the times I spoke with him, that sounds about right. He was a friendly, but fairly private person. He rarely ever toured with Cynic (doing so only on their first tour, and then on their last one before they imploded), and seemed to have little desire to perform otherwise. I had always concluded our conversations with "I hope to see you do a solo stick show someday", and the answer was always some form of "Don't have any plans to".

I would love to get a copy of those stick exercises/sheet music if you happen to find them, btw.

It's sad to hear he's gone. Definitely one of the best stick players around.

Does anyone happen to have a copy of his doctoral thesis? I'd love to read it.

I don't know if he has one. From what I was able to find online, he is listed as "ABD", which I believe is "All but Dissertation", so it may not be published. I've been trying to see if he had any other types of papers published, but no luck so far. He was quite active in the vintage pencil community though, and has 2 blogs to his credit on the subjects. He was a talented writer.

Someone (well, seems that the poster is the former guitar player from Florida death legends Cannibal Corpse) just posted this small video of a very young Sean Malone doing a demo in a guitar convention

Nice. Thanks for sharing that. This must have been shot in the early-mid 90s based on the new prices of Sticks he mentions at the end.

Video details say 1995-ish, so you're right ;)
Wonder when he picked up the Stick for the first time.
