Great show guys! I agree with Rodrigo on moving back and forth between the Railboard and the Grand Stick. Going between the Railboard/Grand Stick was actually easier for me than adapting to the Alto in terms of rearranging pieces. I find that I am writing music specifically for the Alto.

I started with a 10-string, moved to a 10-string grand for additional finger spacing, then finally joined the dark side of 12-string grand players.

The increase in range with the two extra strings was the motivation. I really liked the 10-string Grand. Now I only have 12-string sticks, including a Grand Railboard. I can't see going back.

Thanks for Boaz, Makusz and Jer. It's really interesting to hear your string theory lol..

It seems that we all have our own string story to tell, I'm thoroughly enjoying listening back on Rod and Vic's perspective as my 10 to 12 string journey is still ongoing.

I really enjoyed these and listening to this particular episode. I started out on 10 string Railboard cause it was the cheapest. If Kevin Keith can sound this good so can I I thought. His videos certainly inspired a lot of people to jump on the Railboard. I sold my ten string Railboard cause I love my SG12 which I bought for Bach work. Almost bought a 10 string alto but decided more strings was better I’m currently in a holding pattern waiting for a twelve string grand in Chechen with stick up. Can’t wait. It’s been four months since I ordered so hope it’s getting close. I love that you have two extra strings which mean two extra note choices you can make. Also each string with the same exact note has a slight tonal variation so I might chose a lower string or higher string depending on what I’m after so 12 strings equals more variation. Once I got my SG12 I never touched my Railboard again. I love the feel of wood. It’s organic. The aluminum always felt cold. I loved the sounds I got on Railboard but fell out of love with it so we parted ways.

That’s my two cents (worth much less in Canadian dollars )

Rob

Great podcast, thank you all! I can fully agree with Rob's comment, especially regarding the different materials.

I started with a 10-string because I thought that the stick was originally planned with 10 strings (I'm purist ;) ) and I'm overwhelmed with 12 strings (I was never a bassist but a guitarist). Maybe that was a mistake.

The "missing" strings I compensate with Gene's Full Baritone tuning, which I also transferred to the Alto (a 4th higher). Now I love this tuning on the Alto, because it makes the Alto warmer and more "guitar-like" and takes away that typical zither or harpsichord sound even with light strings.

Thank you all for this podcast! I very much enjoyed listening to all the episodes so far and now I'm looking forward to the next one.

(By the way, listening to your podcast inspired me to have a look and post in this forum again...)

Thanks for the kind words everyone. It was a really fun discussion, and at least for me, one with content sprinkled throughout that had not occurred to me before. So much to learn in these conversations.

It's nice to see you around here, Johannes. Hopefully we're achieving our goal of not seeming like a "www.stickist.com podcast", because our intent is to appeal to as many Stick communities as possible...but still, it really IS nice to see you here! :-)

Great seeing these comments. Oh Rob, if you liked this episode, you are going to love the next one - geez, we probably should have had you on we were talking about you so much.

meugel, loved hearing that Emmett's Full Bari tuning worked on the Alto. I have always wanted an Alto - let me know if ever you can share a recording of that, would love to hear it.

Big tip of hat to Vic and Rod for really pushing the production of these - these guys are really doing the heavy lifting when it comes to editing and mixing down. I just try to sober up before each episode and have a nice thing to say...
