Don't use the instrument for writing. Get away from it and just listen. At the very least, switch instruments. Maybe try writing on the piano for a while.

Excellent, Josh! Sorry for my Wall of Words! There were many good suggestions that other people had, and I don't mean to drown out any other excellent suggestions.

Godsmonkey's advice here is golden, IMHO. I live by this work ethic, absolutely. Get it out, get it down, and then polish it. If it sucks at first, well, anyone can clean shit up if there's something there to work with. Give yourself something to work with! And withhold judgement. There are only happy little trees until the forest comes into focus.

Ben Levin's got this video where he's at the keyboard, and randomly lets his hands fall, two notes in the left hand, and three in the right. Then he writes that chord down. Two or three more times, and he's got an interesting chord progression.

Don't have the link but I'm sure you could find it (I'm in a meeting right now).

Josh,
First off- I want to say you are a real stand up guy and a great player. On that troll's post, I am sorry to see you go through the ringer, but you held your ground heroically , not just for yourself, but for the whole Stick community. I give you the slow clap from the back of the room.

On your slump, look at it positivelly, you may have found "your voice". if your signature style keeps coming up, mistakenly seen as "ground you have trod before", you may be on to something the makes you -Josh -unique and recognizable. So take let's say.... hmmm, an 80's power ballad and give it the Josh spin as if you were a big time producer paid the big $ and hired to put your "signature" on a new release. It will push you out of your comfort zone with a song you may or may not be familiar with and move it to a free creative area of what if I were king of the world. Plus learning a new chord progression always adds to your lexicon and may spark new songs or riffs. Most Bop tunes were new melodies over old Broadway standard chord progressions.

Finally a wonderful painter friend of mine, when we discussing this same subject, told me about a work that is revered through the mulit disciplinary arts community to help with writer's block and to help with being more organized and creative. It is "the Artist's Way" by Julia Cameron. Under $12 USD, the best buck you'll spend this year ( and the year is young). That's 2 Lattes at Starbucks!

Dave, thanks for the tips, that sounds like a fun arranging challenge. I've got a similar book I've taken a lot of influence from over the years called "The Frustrated Songwriter's Handbook" that's all about games and challenges to help break one out of a musical slump.

As for the troll stuff, I admit I was having a good time egging him on. I'm glad I was able to come across well too.
