ok. was messing around with some stuff recently and I have a question:

140 bpm

Man, I feel like I really have to hum on my bass tracks to make that happen

I understand that I do not have to PLAY 140 NOTES per minute...but the tempo seems very fast...can anyone post a link or something to a tune/riff in 140 bpm so I can wrap my head around this?

Sorry, I dont formally read music and just play everything by ear so composing based upon standardized "parameters" (even though this is barely that!) is challenging...

you can always take it half time - 70 bpm

:D Hey, here is a very quick and dirty riff or two I slammed together for you (It's all guitar, and dammit - it was very fun!) I apologize for the crap playing, it is what it is - a very rough reference to how one person might approach it on a Christmas day... (I hope you get a laugh out of it!)

The tempo was at 140bpm, and I used good 'ole C Melodic Minor (Ascending AND descending) - No Sticks to be found! I didn't have anything preplanned so this is literally just a quick off the cuff thing using those ideas. A different sound to be sure! hahaha

So yes, it IS a bit quick as far as tempo goes!. It's a pretty decent clip, and that forces us to maybe adapt a bit differently... I think that simply setting a metronome to 140 bpm, and then playing/singing along to it might be a really good place to start. Don't gotta get too technical, nor does one have to worry about labelling or fancy naming conventions... Just focus on getting a rhythmic thing that works for you at that pulse. Having lots of space is okay too, it doesn't have to be a shredfest! Have fun, and rock out - see what you can come up with that sounds cool, do your best and again, have some fun pushing your own boundaries!

Singing/humming to a click is not a bad idea either, and although I like to play pretty quick, 32nds at this tempo might not be realistic initially... Sometimes sing what kind of statements/themes I can come up with while playing over it lead to the best little bits of music. The singing/humming thing is often overlooked, but I swear that is THE most effective way to warm up, create new ideas, memorize things...

I might take some of those ideas and later refine them, score them out, maybe "write" a solo. A written solo would always start out for me being quite a bit simpler than what I even played here.

And it is really amazing how people discount their own ideas because it's "too simple" or "Not what Robert Fripp would have done" or whatever. Send me what you come up with, I guarantee I make it work one way or the other.

Did I mention that you should have fun while you do this? hahaha

yeah, I found I was actually more comfortable at that speed...will keep plugging away.

Very cool, thanks Steve! I am going to go out of my way to try and produce what you have done in as unique a way as possible!

So far all of the tracks are excellent, and as usual even though everybody's stuff is pretty different, it's gelling really nicely into a coherent piece of music. It's still wide open, so if anyone wants to send me a couple of tracks, that would be most excellent... send, send away!
