Yes, this should be in the teflon section, but I couldn't contain my excitement.....plus...the teflon section gets overlooked. Two months ago after getting jealous of Andys Rick during a FHF....I felt compelled to order one. I had one in 1979, 4001 model, sold it after 5 years....for a Nobby Meidel Warwick model.(which was awesome) They told me 12-18 months...I said no probs, I'm 50 and have patience now. This morning, they called and said the Rick is in.....(instant diaper change insued).....two months instead of eighteen...nice! Picked it up, tried it at the music store. Played some "Heart of the Sunrise" and my fave Bruce Foxton, Geddy Lee licks. ....growly, nasty, dark, raw,.....just like it's supposed to be. Got me a gig in a classic R&R band in the last two weeks, jamming Sunday......gonna bring the Rick....we're gonna do Crossroads and I've learned the Jeff Berlin solo from his cover of said tune.......stoke factor 11... heres a few pics,,,,me circa 1981.... and a pic of the ric i grabbed today....... ps... my dear father...... who is still as sharp as a tack is on the left... Nice. Never had one. Wanted one. (big Chris Squire freak) Got a Jazz Bass instead. Played it with a big nylon pick, Ernie Ball's (couldn't afford Rotosounds) thru a Fender Bassman amp ALL THE WAY UP. Had a reasonable facsimile of HIS sound. (then things got weird...) ROCK ON, DUDE! (ER) |

(ER) ehehe, These rics have quite a distinct sound. Had to immediately remove to bridge pickup cover, 'cause its right in the way of were I play. Also installed a "treble bezel" to fill the hole under the bridge PU......works well... cheers, K-ric |

Around 1999 a great deal on a 4001v63 fell in my lap on Ebay and I couldn't resist - certainly Geddy Lee and Chris Squire are monumental influences and who doesn't love that clanky, chewy mid range tone! Geddy's 4001 sound on the Rush album Signals may be the best bass tone ever recorded. I ended up selling the bass in more recent years when I focused on the Stick and needed some extra money - it sat unused and neglected for long periods of time and I don't have TOO much regret about selling it. I'm much more productive musically when I have a specific, limited focus. I recorded a couple demos with it - the original multi-instrumental version of Differential that became the solo Stick version (thus it originally started as a bass line on the Rickenbacker), and a Rush inspired tribute tune. https://soundcloud.com/rob-martino/differential-1 https://soundcloud.com/rob-martino/rushtojudgement |

On my side it's a Fender Mustang (short scale) I'd like to get again. I had one in the '80s...I hope I find another one. I looked a bit on the net...it seems to be a bit rare today. |

[youtube]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cIN6Yt6iV3U[/youtube] It sounds like a Jazz to me, but it is an amazing bass tone regardless (and not like the playing isn't masterful, of course..) |
