Anyone had a chance to compare the sonic impact of Ash vs Bamboo?
Emmett has stated in the past several times that the wood is basically cosmetic, though, hasn't he? .
Indeed he has, but I'm asking in case there might be different opinions around.

I don't think the various hardwood laminates are different from each other, sonically. The main differences are the construction. The three-tiered bamboo has a very high modulus of rigidity, on par with graphite, and has a sound that is slightly different from the hardwood laminates.

I would describe that sound as "shimmery" as it shows up in the decay of the high frequencies, but it's still very subtle.

The string tension on Sticks is pretty low, so there's not much transfer of the string vibration to the structure, which is actually a very good thing on a two-channel instrument, where you wouldn't want the vibration from one set of strings to influence that of the other set of strings.

The main differences have to do with weight. I think rosewood is the heaviest and mahogany is the lightest. The bamboo is a little heavier than the mahogany.

Excellent post, Greg! This explains a lot of questions I've been thinking about lately. If I can ever afford a backup SG-12 it has to be a bamboo - for the sound I adore - although I must say the wenge builds are the ones I find most beautiful.

It seems rare that people order dyed dark bamboo, any idea why that is? I guess it would look great with black dyed bamboo. The darker wood would protect a bit against a too drastic color change as the dye partially wears off over time.

I sold a Grand dyed in black to a young Norwegian musician: it was beautiful! The wood was paduak, the thinking was it would look better when it wears out, being dark red.
The sides of the instrument were left natural and it had gold/black tuners that perfectly matched the brass on the bridge. Golden linear inlays completed the effect.
It was so stunning and it played so beautifully I really was sad to see it go out the door
