Jammin' is great.....but there's nothing wrong with setting parameters like chord progressions, tempo, feel etc. Free form is fun but not always on the mark. Lotsa' trial and error even with good ears and reaction time.. It is like dialogue. But doesn't conversation usually have a direction, a topic...
